I've finally realised we are in 2021.

Cars Cars Cars

A new Battery yesterday, a new headlight bulb today and the bonnet wouldn't close properly when I replaced the bulb. Hot water and wd40 fixed it.

They say things come in threes so that should be the car ok for a while (touch wood)

re: The SOR Diner is now open for 2021

Thanks for opening up the Diner, Ian. I was thinking of doing it yesterday but landed up having to stay overnight at the hospital after I had a partial lung collapse after a biopsy.
Finally managed to escape this afternoon and now watching large snowflakes falling outside my den window as I rest and catch up on things.

Needless to say, I wish all great cups of hot coffee (with whatever you may wish in it)for the upcoming year

Dave, thank you for your kind words.

Temps here in Rowan County, NC are around 30F so the snow is really coming down good, and sticking. If this keeps up, they might land up closing down the area for a few days

I concur with Ian and hope the "biopsy" results are good news. Snow is a wonderful thing to watch from indoors from a comfortable chair while drinking a hot apple cider and quite conducive to enjoying a new book or magazine (as long as the pipes don't freeze Happy ).

Not sure what has happened with the weather, but here in Manitoba we are currently running 10c above "normals" day and night. Very little snow on the ground, and the forecast is for at least another week of these conditions.
Hopefully it will make the winter shorter and the electricity bills smaller.
Stay safe everyone and especially Mike, hope your recovery is speedy.

David,
Judging by the snowfall in Madrid and the bad weather down in the Ozarks, I think we are getting off lightly, our forecast is currently calling for plus 1 on next Tuesday.
Relatives over in Blighty are saying weather is not very pleasant there either.
Have only fired up the snowblower once this winter and that was just to make sure it ran ok.
Strange times.

Medical update. ... Biopsy results were good. Will have a couple of radiation treatments to kill the thing (which s/b over a 2 week period) and the good part is no need for any chemo drugs. Thanks to all for the well wishes.

Mike in NC / meostamps

PS Last week's snow was all gone by the next morning with the exception of an ice=covered deck. And than melted away by noon.....

Wow that is such good news, Mike! I'm very happy for you!

Avoiding chemo is just fantastic. I struggle with nausea because of my Menieres and other ailments, so anything that helps you avoid that freakin' nasty Chemo nausea is a godsend.

We actually had some snow today, only about 1 inch. It was enough for the kids to go sledging.

The weather forecast for today was supposed to be snow and rain free.

We are supposed to get snow tommorrow so no doubt it will be glorious sunshine or rain or a plague of locusts.

It's still snowing here in Bellefonte, Pa. Around a foot so far. I went out yesterday and again today with the snow blower. Still need to clear off the car and truck, maybe tomorrow. We are in the mountains so the town and county make quick work of plowing the roads, even the small side streets.

So far this winter we have seen very little snow, just 8cm on the ground. A number of sunny days but some cold nights in the minus 30's Centigrade.
Below is our forecast for this week.

And the aftermath of the storm! We had maybe 2 feet of snow in the suburbs west of Philly. It was cleaned up efficiently and roads were clear to the pavement within 24 hours. I had a business meeting yesterday so I ventured onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Completely clear, and I was moving at 80 mph when a large piece of airborne ice came crashing into my windshield. Best I can tell, it came from a truck on the opposite side of the divider.

It did quite a number on the windshield, almost through with glass fragments on the dashboard of my poor little Hyundai. I will make a call to my insurance agent to see if I have coverage, Safe Lite website wants $370. Oh well, I didn't need that high value Columbian stamp I was eyeing anyway!

Let me tell you a story:-

Many years ago one of my drivers returned to the factory with a smashed windsreen. A stone had come off a lorry and went clean through the windscreen and luckily missed the driver and his mate by inches.
The driver said to me that it was lucky that I had not been driving or they would have been killed. (I had a reputation of driving fast).

I said " Eddie. If I had been driving we would have been two miles further down the road when that stone came off that lorry!"

Ha! Big Grin Funny thing to be in that exact position at that exact moment in time to catch the ice with my windshield. I had a 4pm appointment about 40 minutes away. I wasn't exactly sure where I was going so I planned on leaving around 3:00pm. My wife talked me into leaving earlier, so I left at 2:30pm. I told her this was all her fault!

Just sharing... My other hobby is building model cars. I actually spend a lot more time in that arena and have a vast network of friends.

Each year we do a thing we call "The 24 Hour Build". This was the 15th annual, and the ninth for me! We did this last weekend, and the idea is to try to build a reasonable model in 24 straight hours. We started at noon on Saturday and finish at noon on Sunday. There were over 200 people signed up and I can document close to 100 finishes. Yes we are that crazy!

This year was the first time for the 24 hour Zoom room and that was a lot of fun. There were an average of 20 of us holding conversations and just sharing time as we sat at our work benches. The room held an assortment of Americans and Canadians, as well as a couple of Europeans.

All in all, it's just for fun. It's a welcome diversion from our very detailed and long projects. We say it's our annual license to build like a sixth grader!

This year I chose to build a 1929 Ford Model A kit known as the "Red Chariot". This kit was originally issued back around 1962 and is revered in the hobby since many guys remember building this kit as a kid.

The kit tooling still exists today and the main car itself has been issued in modern times. I started with a 10 year old kit. The unique parts that make it a Red Chariot are the engine with the side pipes, the unique cycle fenders and wheel covers that haven't been produced since 1962ish. I collected those over time. I fudged the rear tires, and someone seeing the problem I had dropped me a note, and is sending me an original pair! Hobby folks are the best.

The car turned out wonderfully! It definitely sounds like a fun event. The first model car I ever built was a Monogram model. I remember saving up my fifty cent a week allowance to buy a variety of model cars from the third grade through the seventh grade before taking up coin and stamp collecting as an alternative during the seventh grade. Most models were two dollars each so there was quite a bit of anticipation involved. Happy

Yes! And the guys I share the hobby with today are those same kids who were involved back as kids!
I too started with coins, then stamps when I was 13. I kept building models, but stamps became my main hobby until I hit my 20s and focused on adult responsibilities.

Then I got back to hobbies when I had settled down in a house with two kids and a demanding career. As with stamps, there are guys rediscovering model building when they retired or most recently the hobby has grown exponentially during Covid.

Just finished nearly a month's worth of time working on one of these at work;

...and yes, it was an orange one - 1973 Saab Sonnett III

Saab's one and only entry into the sportscar arena.

Talk about hard to find parts!! One guy, living in his shop out in California. He specializes in just Saab Sonnetts. Living in his shop because his house in in the middle of the wildfires!!!

Replaced the brake master cylinder, the clutch slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, both rear wheel cylinders and a couple of brake lines - that ran inside the car under the drivers seat under the carpet.

A lot of downtime due to having to send the brake master to him to be rebuilt, then waiting for everything to arrive.

Was a bit challenging at times, but it's always fun to work on something different!

Very cool Randall! Did that one have the Ford Taunus V4? I once owned a Saab 95 wagon with that drivetrain. The engine sat ahead of the front axle, and the front axle went through the transmission!

It also had a 4 on the tree! That was fun, except for one quirk. As the car drove, the dash mounted ashtray would rattle open... and the sharp edge of that was exactly where your hand would land when you shifted into fourth gear! I swear there was blood on the edge of the darn thing. As a non-smoker, I taped the ashtray shut!

Tom,

Yes it did have the V4....runs like a top! BUT - that car is SO uncomfortable to drive down the road!! The seats are like kitchen chairs from the 70's...those bucket shaped ones that were stiff as a board; plus, they are installed in the car almost in a reclined position!

re: The SOR Diner is now open for 2021

GARDEN SNAKES CAN BE DANGEROUS...
Snakes also known as Garter Snakes (Thamnophissirtalis) can be dangerous Yes, grass snakes, not rattlesnakes. Here's why.
A couple in Sweetwater, Texas, had a lot of potted plants. During a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing a lot of them indoors to protect them from a possible freeze.
It turned out that a little green garden grass snake was hidden in one of the plants. When it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the sofa.
She let out a very loud scream.
The husband (who was taking a shower) ran out into the living room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the sofa.
He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it. About that time the family dog came and cold-nosed him on the behind. He thought the snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor.
His wife thought he had had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance.
The attendants rushed in, would not listen to his protests, loaded him on the stretcher, and started carrying him out.
About that time, the snake came out from under the sofa and the Emergency Medical Technician saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher. That's when the man broke his leg and why he is still in the hospital.
The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she called on a neighbor who volunteered to capture the snake. He armed himself with a rolled-up newspaper and began poking under the couch.. Soon he decided it was gone and told the woman, who sat down on the sofa in relief.
But while relaxing, her hand dangled in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wriggling around. She screamed and fainted, the snake rushed back under the sofa.
The neighbor man, seeing her lying there passed out, tried to use CPR to revive her.
The neighbor's wife, who had just returned from shopping at the grocery store, saw her husband's mouth on the woman's mouth and slammed her husband in the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his scalp to a point where it needed stitches.
The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her neighbor lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, so she assumed that the snake had bitten him. She went to the kitchen and got a small bottle of whiskey, and began pouring it down the man's throat.
By now, the police had arrived.
Breathe here...
They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey, and assumed that a drunken fight had occurred. They were about to arrest them all, when the women tried to explain how it all happened over a little garden snake!
The police called an ambulance, which took away the neighbor and his sobbing wife.
Now, the little snake again crawled out from under the sofa and one of the policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table. The table fell over, the lamp on it shattered and, as the bulb broke, it started a fire in the drapes.
The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and fell through the window into the yard on top of the family dog who, startled, jumped out and raced into the street, where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it and smashed into the parked police car.
Meanwhile, neighbors saw the burning drapes and called in the fire department. The firemen had started raising the fire ladder when they were halfway down the street. The rising ladder tore out the overhead wires, put out the power, and disconnected the telephones in a ten-square city block area (but they did get the house fire out).
Time passed! Both men were discharged from the hospital, the house was repaired, the dog came home, the police acquired a new car and all was right with their world.
A while later they were watching TV and the weatherman announced a cold snap for that night. The wife asked her husband if he thought they should bring in their plants for the night.
And that's when he shot her.

there are times when one's mouth starts hurting from the involuntary smile, which is nothing like the pain coming from one's chest as one struggles to breathe, gasping for air for the laughter that steals the air, all the while feeling the jaws strain.

that damn snake has a far reach

re: The SOR Diner is now open for 2021

Awoke to the sad news today that Prince Philip had died. Had the pleasure of speaking with him once when he came to our boys club, no airs or graces, just plain old down to earth regular guy. That was early 1960's.
Condolences to your family.

Thanks for the note about Prince Philip. I saw a post on AOL.com this morning as well and watched a video of an interview with him from 1969 with Barbar Walters where he definitely came across as a very "real" human being. I appreciate your personal recollection being shared.

What they didn't have any of that 60's type with the large flower patterns or the flocked stuff from the Indian restaurant , you are the lucky guy today, time to buy a lottery ticket.

Oh they had plenty of Large Floral stuff in bright colours, shimmering glitter coated florals in gaudy colours as well
1970's Geometrics in the same colours as the florals but they did not supply the sunglasses to dim the dazzle.
Yes they had the "Curry House" range and the Mettalics.
The rest of the papers were non descript, insipid and devoid of any colour.

One extreme to the other.

I certainly "dodged the bullet" today.
