United States/BOB & Other : Imperforate or trimmed revenue stamp??

Relaxing with some wine this evening and sorting through my revenues and found this one with no perfs. I did a search on "Scott R55 Imperf" and came back with no results. Plenty of hits for others in this series that are imperfs but not this one.

I scanned another in the series alongside this one for comparison.

What do the experts here think? Has it been trimmed and if so . . why?

Also why are there holes punched in these when they have clearly been canceled with a pen?

Thanks!

re: Imperforate or trimmed revenue stamp??

What you have is a copy of a US revenue, Scott #R55b that someone has trimmed the perfs off the left and right sides to make it appear to be an imperforate stamp - probably to try to pass it off as such in an attempt to make some profit from it.

However, this stamp was never imperforate - it was only part perfed (perfs vertical only) or full-perfed.

This is what my copy looks like...and what yours USED to look like!

And regardng the hole;

this was the way revenues of that era were often cancelled, even though it was pen-cancelled beforehand. It helped to prevent re-use.

The punch cancel drastically lowers the value of the stamp, according to the Scott catalog.
