More to ponder...Can you tell the difference between these four versions of the Pieck stamps in question? Neither can I, however, when I turned them over and held them up face side to a strong light:
a) #1 and #3 showed Pieck's face clearly and the background colour looked light red brown.
b) #2 and #4 showed Pieck's face very clearly and the colour looked dark red brown.
Still couldn't discern any type of watermark on any of the 4 however!
The plot thickens.
Dave.

Perhaps the water marks were erased by some clever devil !
Hi Lemaven
I only have 2 stamps from these series, I checked them now when I saw your question.
The Wz 1 watermark is easy to identify.
I also have problems identifying Wz 2 on stamps smaller than 1 and 2 Mark.
You have the information from the Michel catalog (including emission printing data)
The criteria for differentiating 2 Mark stamp emissions can be:
-date of cancellation
-grid difference (60 or 73)
-color / paper (harder if you don't have a consistent set of stamps)
Hello Lemaven,
It is indeed quite a puzzle to classify these types of stamps.
First of all,
there are 2 different images of the stamps.
Those from 1950 and 1952 have the same image.
Those of 1953 and 1958 also have the same image but are different from those of 1950 and 1952.
So your stamps are from 1950 or 1952. That is for sure.
The 1950s stamps have water mark 1
Watermark 1
The 1952 stamps have watermark 2
Watermark 2
In the following figure I have indicated markings that are different for 1950 and 1952.
1) The 1950 script is unclear, the 1952 script is easier to read.
2) The 1 mark edition clearly has 2 vertical stripes above the inner side of the eyebrows in the 1952 version, which is much less in the 1950 version.
So far I can see is your 1 mark stamp from 1952 and your 2 mark stamp also from 1952
(the script is easy to read, The 1 mark edition clearly has 2 vertical stripes above the inner side of the eyebrows)
But still it really bepends on the watermarks to be sure.
Here are a couple of the higher value President Wilhelm Pieck issues.
The original set (Perf 13 x 12.5) was issued in 1950-51: 1 DM Olive #56, 2 DM Red Brown #57.
They were then reissued in 1952-53 (#116-117) with the same perfs and colors (and no noted differences in paper) but with different watermarks.
I have wasted hours (or at least several minutes) doing all the usual watermark checks on a dozen stamps, but to no avail - I just can't see a discernable watermark let alone different versions!!! Very frustrating!!!
So before I just change my album to collect one of each value and just note on my album page that they were issued with different watermarks, I'd like to find out if anyone knows of another way to differentiate the issues (e.g. shading, paper thickness, other "secret" markings?)
This is especially important as the 1 DM #56 has a CV of $5.75 and the 1 DM #116 has a CV of $16.00 (both Used).
P.S. The shading on the two shown is quite different, but I'm not sure if that is due to the denominations or the years of issue.
Many thanks, Dave.
