Today I was browsing a new Skanfil catalog that arrived in the mail. I didn’t ask for a hard copy as I find that the online listings are more convenient as I can zoom in on pics and use the search function. That said, it was pleasant to just have a cup of coffee and read one like a magazine. BUT - I am glad they sent it!

The specialists here will read the following and think, well, duh!, of course! But for the intermediate or newer collectors, or those who are just beginning to dig deeper and specialize in an area for the first time, well, this might be a new thought and certainly worth considering. Anyways - The auction catalog really reminded me how important it is to identify the big auction houses that specialize in whatever area you collect. Even if you aren’t currently buying, seeing all of the varieties, postal history etc is a tremendously helpful way to learn more about your area of interest. These catalogs are one of the very few places where you can see this type of material pictured, described and valued.

Sure, I may not be able to afford many of the items in the auction catalog, but let’s say some of the overprints, essays or other items not listed in the general catalog I’m currently using appear in a collection I’m thinking of bidding on. Being able to spot those is sure useful and would definitely affect how I bid. Knowledge is power!

And the best part - many of these catalogs are FREE! That’s why the pros keep old auction catalogs in their reference libraries.

re: Auction Catalogs as excellent information sources - a tip for newer collectors

I have a collection of auction catalogs. I have been trying to downsize the collection lately. I do have a lot of catalogs that I downloaded to my virtual library. My main collecting interest is US markings and cancels but I have many sales of other collecting areas. I like name sale catalogs when a collector sells off a collection. Sales of exhibits is another favorite. Some of the topics are Civil War/Confederate postal history, advertising, encased postage.
Auction houses are starting to put their sales on line and leaving them for future reference, Siegel has a great resource. They also have scans of exhibits before they were broken up for sale.
Sometimes I browse https://stampauctionnetwork.com/ for current auctions and check out them for something that interests me.
Before my move to Bellefonte I would get catalogs from my monthly club meeting. My club is now having Zoom meetings. If there is any interest send me an email and I will give you the address. Next meeting is tomorrow night 7:30 pm est.
