Silence in the face of adversity is the father of complicity and collusion, the first cousins of conspiracy..

A News Flash> HUZZAR !!! Our Canadian friends have completed 24 hours without a single new Covid 19 case. Congratulations. I hope the trend continues.
I wonder what Canada is doing that we are not ?
Maybe it's the water.

Correction; It should say "deaths." No new deaths in 24 hours.
It's still a cheering thought in a world of troubles.

Charlie, not sure where you get the news but they have just announced 21 new cases in Manitoba.
Even worse over in Ontario and Quebec.

Would be nice not to have any, masks are mandatory here in public places.

re: Covid - Canada

Sorry Charlie, but that seems to be the much ballyhooed "fake news" we hear rumours about up here in the frozen tundra. In fact, Ontario (my province) had almost 250 new cases yesterday - a high number for us.

Unfortunately, it's not the water - it's the booze... Most of the recent cases are from younger people who are swarming bars and restaurants. In London (my City) we had 5 new confirmed cases - all returning University students who attended numerous pubs and eateries to "celebrate".

We are doing some things right (perhaps moreso than the U.S. but I don't know for sure). But one concerning problem we have (and it seems to be an unwelcome import into our country) is the growing number of moronic anti-mask protesters who espouse the delusion that COVID (not sure if their focus is on the actual disease, the reporting of cases, or the health effects) is somehow a conspiracy (not sure if their target is "The Chinese", socialists, or aliens) and their position that mask-wearing is an infringement of their (God-Given? Constitutional?) "right to freedom".

When we moved our daughter back to Toronto last weekend (after 4 months living with us from being diagnosed with Type I diabetes) we somehow got entangled in a large group of anti-maskers whose behaviour made the proverbial "drunken sailors" look like Mother Theresa in comparison. A guy holding a sign "Masks - Our Choice - Our Freedom" tried to pull her mask off (perhaps thinking she was a counter-protestor). So much for his valuing actual choice and freedom - I guess he felt that only applied to his gang and their philosophy. But I was proud of my daughter when she exercised her right to freedom (from a potentially life-threatening assault) by punching him in the throat. Thankfully, other people pulled him back realizing he had gone too far.

No politics here. But a lot of sadness over how FU things are right now - especially with my wife (immunocompromised with Lupus and Crohn's) back to work at her elementary school - today being the first day with students - and apparently sketchy adherence to any kind of safety protocols.

Stay safe, Dave.

Dialysis, damned if you do...dead if you don't

re: Covid - Canada

Comparing COVID numbers across countries is very difficult and offers the media and politicians the perfect opportunity to use the numbers to promote their agendas.

For example, the Canadian COVID case-fatality ratio is more than twice that of the US (Canada = 6.7% vs. US = 3.0%) according to John Hopkins. It is easy to spin this as US doing a lot better than Canada. But the US has tested 6,519,573 people and Canada has tested less than 150,000 people and this no doubt is helping lower the US case-fatality ratio.

Additionally, things like population density most assuredly impacts the spread of this virus. The US has a population density more than 8 times that of Canada (US = 87 people per square mile vs Canada = 10 people per square mile).

These are just two of hundreds of variables that make comparing COVID between countries incredibly complex.

I think that it is possible to find metrics and numbers which support almost any position a person might want to take. And has been demonstrated COVID has become the perfect storm of media spin and political weaponization. The result of this has been highly confusing messaging, devastated economies, and a scared to death public. Instead of making public health the priority, the media and politicians have shown they will stop at nothing to stay in power, generate ratings, and make money. The number of deaths and destruction of this hyper-politicization is something that is underreported but is just as important in terms of the impact to our society.

But the most dangerous lesson from 2020 is that the media and politicians have learned how easy it is to use fear to control us. In my opinion the use of fear will become even more common place now, it has been proven to be a highly effective and easy method for manipulating entire populations. No matter what the topic (climate, racism, etc.) the new approach is to scare everyone to death by using over-simplified metrics and a complicit media to control us.

Well said Don.

Having to live under a National Socialist government for the past 10 years I have seen how they manipulate the peoples fears for their benefit.

And don't forget that case fatalities started high in both Canada and USA, then sharply reduced in both countries....AND....number of cases in Canada also dropped sharply at that time, and remained low, while USA had very large resurgences of cases, with low mortality.
Numbers are not comparable, so politicians are blowing hot air as usual.....everywhere.

re: Covid - Canada

I live in Nova Scotia and we rarely have cases anymore, any that do crop up are travel related. But then again the population of N.S. is only about one million, compared to the population of New York City, which is just under 19 million. In Nova Scotia you can drive for miles-and-miles and see nothing but miles-and-miles. I really would never want to live anywhere else!!!

I think that Charlie meant no new COVID deaths reported. This was published by all the main stream media outlets like CBS, ABC, CNN, and Fox.

Another case of post midnight comment. Shucks !
Correction applied.
It sounded too good to be true, at least for now.

That makes sense. Yes, no deaths per day is common. Unfortunately, it does happen, and probably will until we get a vaccine! Hopefully by Spring or Summer next year. That's. a long time to practice your distancing and wearing masks! I'll be glad when we can return to some semblance of past times, like last year!

re: Covid - Canada

No worries Charlie.

In surveys, when Canadians are asked to describe themselves as a people, 92.73% respond with "We aren't Americans".

So any fake news (or an honest misinterpretation, if that is still allowed to be made in the current politicized/intolerant milieu) that makes Canucks look better than Yankees is all right with us, eh!

Dave.
