My memory fails me. I know that name is familiar
and I think he sold plate blocks, first flights
or something, but I have been looking at this
envelope to him in "NIOTA,Ill."
I cannot seem to recall why it is familiar or why
I have kept it all these years.
There was something special there.

re: Elmer F. Smith

I did a search on google and his name appeared as a stamp seller from Pontoosuc Illinois in a periodical called Philatelic Gossip. Do a google search on Elmer F Smith Pontoosuc Illinois and it will come up. It shows in Google Book format which is hard to navigate. There is a search box where you can put in his name and it will show all pages where his "ads" appear. The date of this periodical was September of 1917 ! This is either the person you were looking for or someone else with the same name that sold stamps back then ? I checked NIOTA Illinois is less than 5 miles from Pontoosuc so I assume this is the same person ! Steve

re: Elmer F. Smith

Strange, I had put his name and the town into Google twice and only got a similar name who had died a bit more recently.
But he must have been an approvals dealer back in the '40s and '50s. The envelope I have is from July 13th 1947. I know I held it for a reason, but my memory is getting foggy at times now. The sender, Frank Odziana used a 5¢ C-32 from Detroit to NIOTA.
The Envelope is tan and Smith's address was pre-printed for returns.

I spent all afternoon Sunday looking through a plastic shoe box stuffed with six inch envelopes from the late 1800s to a few years ago. I knew why I had saved most of them, but this one simply did not ring a bell.
