Before I get to the specifics of what I looking for, I want to state that I'm not new to collecting. I've been a numismatist for a number of years and more recently have branched into philately thanks to a good friend (who actually referred me to this site). I say this just so I can put into perspective that I'm not technically a beginner. However, I'd like to find a book that would lay out some of the basics so that I could better understand philately and philatelists as compared to numismatics and numismatists.

One of the tenets passed to new coin collectors is, "Buy the book before the coin!" which is likely something that is expressed in stamp collecting as well. For coin collecting, the book is The Guide Book of United States Coins by R.S. Yeoman. This book more or less lays out a great foundation to coin collecting and introduces the collector to United States coins as well. I'm looking for the equivalent for stamp collecting. Any suggestions?

USPS used to publish a very helpful book. I don't know if they still do, but here is link to the USPS Stamp Collecting site.
