Some Wikipedia articles have tables that can be sorted - look for the little triangles next to the column titles. You could also copy the tables into spreadsheets and use the data sort function.
http://www.geonames.org/ may also help when searching for place names.
You could also post images of the postmarks in question - sometimes it is possible to identify the place.
Hello David,
In a similar discussion a year or so ago:
https://stamporama.com/discboard/disc_main.php?action=20&id=21435#156176
I suggested a site that I've always found very useful in the past:
https://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/
However, there seems to have been a security configuration problem with the site in recent weeks so my browsers will not currently connect to it.
I guess this will be fixed and we can use it again at some point.

That site ( GEONAMES....) is probably HACKED.
My Browser gives the following description :
Warning: possible security risk
Your Browser detected a potential security risk and did not proceed to geonames.nga.mil. When you visit this website, attackers may attempt to steal information such as your passwords, email addresses or credit card information.
What can you do about this?
The problem is most likely with the website, and there is nothing you can do to fix it.
If you are on a business network or using antivirus software, you can contact the support departments for assistance. You can also inform the website administrator of the problem.
The problem is simply that the site's security certificate is provided by the Dept. of Defence (military) and is not recognized by Windows.

I use Wikipedia. I've found what I've been looking for there.
I am going through a bunch of stamps for The Holocaust Stamps Project to find postmarks that can be cross-referenced against important precursors to, or events during, The Holocaust for my educational initiative.
Some are quite difficult as there are just snippets of the middle or ending letters - and some are no longer in the countries of the stamps they are on (e.g. Austrian towns/regions given to other countries after WWI).
Wikipedia lists towns by population but I need something sorted alphabetically - preferably with a search function where I can use letters and "wildcards".
Any help finding a link would be much appreciated.
Many thanks, David.
