General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : Question: Mount Assortments

I pretty much collect only used stamps. I do have a few unused but nothing of high value. I collect for fun, not investment. That being said I do have a few items that have some value and therefore I want to protect them (no hinges!).

Does anyone sell a package of assorted mount sizes? I really only need sizes for US regular issue, US regular commemorative, and the odd US airmail Zeppelin size. I find the websites that offer mounts to be confusing regarding sizes, and I would prefer individual mounts rather than strip. Is it fair to assume that any brand offered nowadays is safe in the long term?

Thanks in advance,
Geoff

re: Question: Mount Assortments

There are several assorted mount sizes either in pre-cut sizes or cut your own. I buy all my mounts from globalstamps.com (a member here). You can buy a set of 320 mounts in 8 sizes for US stamps precut or packs of multiple smaller, medium, and souvenir sheet size cut your own mounts. If you have mostly US then the precut assorted sizes might work for you. It's $16 or so plus shipping, free shipping after $35.

re: Question: Mount Assortments

Another option would be to purchase open-top mounts. With these, both the width and the height of the mount can be adjusted by just trimming off the excess. This can greatly cut down on the number of different sized mounts you need to maintain in inventory.

Palo Albums offers such mounts in case you are interested. They offer five sizes in height that will cover everything from the smallest stamp to nearly the largest souvenir sheet.

I purchase clear split back mounts and cut them in half (length-wise) to get get top loading mounts. It does reduce the number of sizes you need.

re: Question: Mount Assortments

After a nice bit of email communication with Dawn at Global Stamps I've ordered a selection of mounts from them. Plus some (gasp!) hinges.

Any of you might try contacting SOR member Chrisglad4, name is Brian Weigand, by SOR message. I believe he has a lot of extra ShowGard or like mounts. Perhaps he can help who needs help. ccndd Chris
