I've been trying to notice what appears to sell on SOR. I might be out to lunch because I am not really doing statistics, just trying to take note of what I think I am seeing. There seem to be a few of us who will fight over the older and (in my opinion) better pieces. But when I look at approval books and auction items there seems to be an awful lot of newer material changing hands. Has anyone out there been keeping statistics on this? I am really curious. When I started collecting many years ago collectors kept well organized collections of older stamps. Is this changing? I also think collecting by topic is much more popular than it used to be. I could probably research this on line and get "expert" opinions, but this seems like more fun! How about someone posting a survey so we could all give our preferences and opinions to the end of getting some actual statistics?

Do you have a year that defines older vs newer?

Good point, never thought of that. I'll use my cut off for my World Collection (1955), my Canada collection (1988), U.S. (1976), Poland (1985) and Russia (1985), then average and round off the 5 dates and come up with about 1978. Lets say before that is old and after that is new. Very arbitrary, but it's a place to start!

From what I have seen is British Commonwealth Mint (may be hinged) KGVI and engraved QEII go very very quickly - 1 day or so.

Hello, I have also noticed a faint interest, but an interest nonetheless, of older Cuban material, pre-1960s.

"Artstamp" The interest in older Cuba is partially my fault. Myself and a couple others seem to be going nuts over older Cuba. I think I've picked up at least 100 older Cuba stamps in the last month. But you could be right, once I missed a Cuba book by a few hours and by the time I got to it at least half of it was gone.

I find collecting the first 600 stamps of Cuba enjoyable..and there are folks that do collect it into the wallpaper era. To each his own.

re: Do I see a trend?

People tell me all the time "I have a pile of old stamps from the 1950s and 1960s".

I tell them that "nothing younger than I am is old".

re: Do I see a trend?

But in response to Harvey's original question:

I find that British Commonwealth/Colonies up to the early QEII sets, mint or used are popular.

From about 1960 on, almost all countries (Far East and China excluded) sell at a discount to the original face value. Mint from countries in Europe in that period are a glut.

Then, moving on to used only, 1970s and 1980s, everybody has, except for countries that never had a large following like Latin America. Great demand for anything used newer than 2000.

These are all very generalized observations .... refraining from picking nits would be appreciated.

re: Do I see a trend?

Here in Thailand at the joint annual meeting of members of the British and American Thai philatelic societies we were fortunate to have the owner of the leading auction house in Bangkok attending. His thoughts were that the market had changed. After the previous king died there was great demand for material from his reign. Now the market is discounting more modern post-war issues and the demand is for older material.

I don't know if this tells us anything or not, but I currently have 75 items on E-bay. Most have 2 - 7 VIEWS. A PRC Olympic Booklet has 30 VIEWs, a Cuba #C183-C184 Set has 83 VIEWS, and a Austria #B277 has 22 VIEWS. Most every China item I list on E-bay sells to a collector in the PRC. It's really difficult to predict what will sell and what won't sell.
