Here are some of the Biafra stamps I have:-
The third and fourth scans show stamps that were printed but there is no evidence that they were used for postage within Bafra.
Other stamps were printed but again they were not used within Biafra.
The handstamp of UMUAHIA was used to produce CTO stamps. This handstamp has 3mm high Letters and the year date in full.
I just recently (last year) got back into stamping after about a 50+ yr hiatus (long story why I quit & another what got me thinking about it again) bc some of my grandkids got interested in collecting now.
Anyways I don't know why I never thought about it but I lived in Nigeria 1966-68. My dad taught at the University of Nigeria in Ibadan. We arrived shortly after the "trains" which was a small part of the atrocities committed by the Muslim Hausas in the Northern Region against the Christian Igbos in the Eastern Region... a pogrom before the civil war broke out in 67. There are many horror stories that came out of Biafra but perhaps the worst was all the children who starved to death... possibly upwards of a million plus. True nbrs are difficult bc captured Biafran soldiers were often tortured, killed & just left to rot in the jungle. The gutless UN apparently decided it wasn't in their own best interest to intervene. I do not recall any war criminal trials postwar. Hopefully I'm wrong but...
We got most of our news thru the Catholic church we attended as they had people in Biafra. My dad, tho he taught at the University, had some ties w the US Embassy since he headed up the NYU/USAID joint project to start the school of business in the University. So he got some intel from them as well. All in all I would never trade that time in Nigeria for anything. I only wish I paid more attention. Did I happen to mention ADHD? I wasn't diagnosed until about age 50. At 65 it's still a big struggle trying to teach an old doug new tricks! ????
Anyways I just started collecting these & have them all except for used. Those few genuine used ones are going for an arm & 2 legs... well, when you're living on a very limited fixed disability income almost any price above $50 is a lot.
Anyways somewhere's in my stamps I think I have some letters from when we lived in Nigeria during that time. But we lived on Victoria Island just across the lagoon from Lagos proper. Our school (AIS... American International School of Lagos) had an army camp built adjacent to us. We saw the ack-ack guns right outside our windows on that side. 1 day we heard some yelling & screaming. We looked out the window to see a soldier being caned. There was a soldier on each limb suspending him midair w a 5th beating on his bare abdominal area w a bamboo cane. Then they tossed him outside the gate.
Oh the things that go on in countries that do not enjoy the freedoms & privileges we here take so much for granted. That's why when I see people whining & complaining I find myself wishing I had the denarii to airdrop them all into some backwoods country for a reality check... I'd drop them in North Korea if they were really hardcore. ????
????
Sorry. Must be the US Marine Veteran in me saying that. Anyways I just happened upon your site while looking up something on this very Biafra & when I saw the stamps I had to say something. Thanx for sharing.
BTW it didn't dawn on me until recently that Biafra even had stamps. I had picked up a 2017 Scott's for cheap, A-B, & whilst perusing thru it I came across Biafra & it was like "NO WAY DUDE... YA WAY DUDE! FARM OUT & RIGHT ARM!" Anyways that's all for now. L8r.
Another reason to check BuckaCover for those elusive covers. I got some good ones sa few weeks ago.

Here i am telling tales out of school again, at our last stamp club meeting one of the members brought in a collection from the very short lived country of Biafra that a Priest who was there put together. Interesting, i do not have a single Biafra stamp.
