Sometimes holding it up to a very bright light will make it visible....but not always.
Hi Sally,
Your ID is correct, it is a UX7. And musicman is correct, a VERY strong light will often reveal the watermark (which is larger than a stamp watermark). Do not soak the card. Given the inscription the ID of the card makes checking for a watermark unnecessary.
Don
It looks like Leroy Ohio to me.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the opinions and information.
Musicman - thanks for posting the actual watermark illustrations.
Don - thanks for confirming my ID was correct
Tom - thanks for confirming it is Ohio. That's what the card donor thought but wasn't sure because it is so faint.
I knew the watermark didn't apply to this card but was curious about how to check other cards. Bright light it is!

This card was donated to our club to sell at auction. After checking my 2013 Scott Specialized catalog, it appears to be UX 7 with a listed value of 40 cents. Postmark appears to be Le Roy Nov 15 1882 not sure of state at bottom....
Scott also lists two similar cards as UX4 and UX5. UX4 is supposed to have a watermark, small "U S P O D" in Monogram. I am wondering if the monogram is the "US" that appears under the words "Postal Card" and how one would check for a watermark on a used postal card. I would be reluctant to wet a card like this in case the old, faded ink would run. How do you check watermarks on postal cards?
Thanks,
Sally
