I have come across a few high-value Irish definitives, 2/6, 5/-, 10/-, both the Seahorse overprints and the St. Patricks with indistinct violet or purple cancellations.
Similar to the violet cancellations on these two stamps - although in the first instance it is accompanied by what looks like a regular postal cancellation.

Based on the stamp issuing entities that I am more familiar with, I would assume that these are fiscal cancellations but of course that does not necessarily hold true for Ireland. If so, what sort of cancellations are they?
Thanks,
Clive

Parcel cancels are also possible, in particular on these higher face values.

re: Irish definitives- purple/violet cancellations

I would be suspicious of them having been used for revenue purposes, but it is hard to tell from the partial cancel. I have found a number of what look like CDS that are actually revenue usage. They were from British Colonies, and not from Ireland - so I could be wrong. But my feeling in general for used higher value stamps is that they were used for revenue purposes unless I can prove it was used some other way.

re: Irish definitives- purple/violet cancellations

Thanks for the response jmh67 and kgvistamps,

From my experience with British Colony revenue cancels, the violet cancels are most often oval, whereas these Irish cancels look rectangular, so I am wondering then if these aren't perhaps parcel cancels.

I haved searched the web for examples of Irish parcel cancels but have not had any luck. If anyone has examples they could post I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Clive

Clive -

In my opinion, they are parcel post cancels. Here are the some cancels from my collection:
