What's with these new perforations that I'm seeing now with little oval cut out gaps - a lot of GB stamps seem to have them. What kind of purpose are they supposed to serve? Just curious!

Such perforations have been used for some time. They are counterfeit deterrents.

These are called 'syncopated perfs'.

Or if you live in the UK, or collect by Gibbons, they are called Elliptical Perforations. (Ellipses)

Synchopated perfs are a little different than the elongated perfs.

Synchopated have a skip in perforations between the regular perfs
(like this: .... ___ ....), or a skip at each corner of the stamp. The Netherlands used these in the 1920s and 1930s.

"Elliptical Perforations"

And believe it or not, there are five or six tiny shape differences by
which, when examining pairs or blocks can identify a Machin's printer.

Portugal have got it down to a fine art

But Hong Kong SAR take the prize in my view, with elliptical perfs AND perfs around the value. I doubt that these will ever be forged!

The use of certain words is all part of learning the catalog or album makers terms.
