I collect Washington/Franklins, but not with any vigour. I rely, perhaps foolishly, on dealers’ descriptions. As I’ve mentioned before, Beverly Fox, co-owner of Weeda Stamps, told me that she simply refuses to deal with Washington/Franklins. Perhaps that’s why Weeda concentrates on Canada. But that leaves the question of Canada’s difficult-to-ID KGV Admiral stamps. I quit collecting those because I couldn’t tell one variety from another, especially the colour varieties.

Sorry all-my bad-I should have proofed the reference before making it. Thanks for the corrections.

No worries, Dan
My original post was referring to the 1870-1890s banknote issues (my bad for not saying that) while the USPCS link above is for the 1851 series. But that be as it may, the USPCS link is a great reference.
For the 1870-1890s link it would be:
https://www.uspcs.org/stamps-covers/uspod-issued-adhesives/the-1870-93-issues/
Along with Stampsmarter and Swedish Tiger, I love the USPCS resources.

This past weekend I finally tackled sorting through the bank not issues. It don't have a ton of them and they are all used and really of no great value, but I have enough to take my sweet time to try to learn how to identify them.
Between secret marks and watermarks it was enough to drive me to drink. I just could not easily determine if the watermarks were there. As for secret marks, many were easy to follow (Thanks to Stampsmarter and Swedishtiger sites for their aids). I had it easier as I had none with grills, so that narrowed the sorting, but the green 3 cent Washingtons were challenging on the secret mark, at least to me.
This one looks clear to me:
This one looks not to have it to me:
Sometimes I felt like I might as well wet my finger and see which way the wind is blowing. The other one I had great difficulty with was determining if a 2 cent Washington was a type iV, Scott 279B. I was finding some subjects would had part of the characteristics, and some other parts of the characteristics. I found Swedish Tiger was helpful there, but it still was not simple.
I don't know if others have similar difficulties in deciding, but I cringe thinking of doing the Washington/Franklins soon.
