I am in the middle of a ten day business trip in Los Angeles. While I am very busy during the day the evenings are quiet and mostly spent in the hotel on the net, or watching TV, or doing crosswords, or any combination of those things. I don't have a rental car and I am in an area I am familiar with so there is no interest in sightseeing. I keep thinking that this is a time I could be working on my collection!

I just recently started collecting Norway, and want to spend some time on the issues. Certainly nothing valuable yet, and a lot to learn. I am trying to figure out a way, on my next trip, to bring my album, some stamps, hinges, and other tools kept to a minimum with me so that I can work on the collection. I check a bag but some of this I could carry on.

Has anyone done this and have any suggestions on the best way? My biggest concern is stamp identification, I do not want to bring my Scott's or Facit. Anything I can't figure out I can put aside for when I get home.

Thanks!
Geoff

I would only put the stamps in carry on, not checked baggage.

re: Traveling with Stamps

Not having a catalog at hand when sorting stamps appears to me a major impairment. But if you carry a laptop computer or a smartphone, and your hotel has a decent internet connection/WLAN, you might be able to make do with one of the online catalogs. Don't carry the whole album, just some pages in a binder or a folder, but bring some envelopes and/or stock cards for easier sorting.

Other than that, you might have to leave some of the identification for home anyway, because there are several Norwegian stamps with watermark varieties (i.e. with or without watermark).

I travel a lot, and I often take some stamps with me. Perhaps some world to sort, or some KGV heads. I often take my scanner and catalogue, but do rely on some PDF catalogues I have.

I'm in a tent right now, and didn't bring anything. A proper break Happy

David, I hope that's not loitering within tent.

A little story - Not too long after I started collecting I traveled by plane from Nova Scotia to Alberta with my stamp collection in my suit case. When I picked up my luggage at the airport the suit case had been forced open and any Canadian stamps that the perp considered to be "usable", i.e. recent, were removed. Thankfully the more valuable early stuff was not touched. Thank God for stupid thieves!!!!

My daughter worked for Joe McNally (photographer, known as the Master of light).
They did a 15 city tour to photograph musician athletes for Sports Illustrated.
What Mr. McNally insisted on was either U P S or FedExing all his equipment to the next city, next day air.

I know he was paid "Plus expenses" but after he went to California, and some of his cameras, lights and reflectors went to Hawaii, he had to rent equipment to finish a shoot.

He eventually got his equipment back, but if you have a known location that you are traveling to and a hotel you will be staying at this is the safest way to get your stamp collection from home to where you will be staying, and sending it back home only takes a fw minutes to do as well.

re: Traveling with Stamps

All,

Thanks, lots of good ideas. Since this is a "starter" collection I don't have anything valuable, and the assortment of stamps I have I am sure has nothing big. I will probably take the Steiner pages out of the binder and store them in a manila envelope for travel.

It just occurred to me (d'oh!) that I have the Stamp Manage database on my laptop, so catalog issue somewhat solved! Not perfect for stamp identification but certainly for determining the Scott number for some issues.

I head out again in about ten days and will give some more thought to this and let you know what I pack.
