Image Not FoundI found this postcard at a stamp show last weekend in a dollar box from a dealer who had purchased a large collection of postcards. Everything in the collection was well organized by state (and to some extent by city).

I found this postcard in a stack of postcards from Virginia. Although it is possible that it became mixed up as customers pulled cards aside, it does look like it could be Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Winchester, Manassas, etc.

Does the image look familiar to anyone?

If no one here can help and you want to do some research, try to find the Sanborn™ fire insurance map sets from the 19th century for the cities that may be candidates. In Indiana, virtually all the early Sanborn™ map sets have been published, but many states haven't had an institution (Indiana University in Indiana) take on this task.

The value of the maps is the detailed information on individual buildings and their footprints. With practice, it's possible to identify images like this based on the building materials, number of stories, etc. In this case you've got a church with a steeple (could be a school, but less likely) in the background. That makes identifying this scene with the Sanborn™ maps much easier. The maps will even tell you the height of the steeple!

I've seen these called Orphaned RPPCs, and there sure are a lot of them out there.

One stupid trick is to take a genuinely good HiRes (eg 600 dpi) scan of the card, and then search for that image, and then get stupid lucky when you find someone who 1) also owns that image, and 2) thinks that they know the location.

Thanks iKeyPikey and Tom,

Great ideas. Unfortunately google images and tineye did not turn up anything. The fire insurance maps will take some time to work through.

Best,
Frank
