I am now finishing up 1976 in my USA albums! As some folks know, I keep my collection in Ultra-Pro 2 pocket pages. I keep everything together as if I was building a stamp display for that stamp issue.

Back when this series was issued, I was a high school senior so I was lucky to afford two sheets of new stamps for $13. Keep in mind that represented more money than it is today. Back then I could fill my gas tank for $6. I didn't want to collect 50 first day covers then, nor do I want to today. I just want to have a reasonable representation in my album. And this will serve as a guide as I move forward into more multiple stamp issues in the following years.

My album format has been easy enough for most stamps and it's been dandy from the 1920s on up until I hit this set of 50 stamps. How was I going to sort them to fit within my page format and make logical order? Here's what I did...

The first page starts out like all my other stamp issues. That's my typical header with stamp issue, date of issue and Scott numbers. This issue had it's first day at every post office across the country, so you could buy them in your local post office. And first day covers were serviced in Washington, DC as well as all the state capitols. I illustrated this on the first page with the two covers chosen. The NJ cover was drawn by me in ink, no doubt traced over a master. And of course, it was the New Jersey stamp, serviced in the state capitol because I lived in NJ.

So how do we divide up 50 states into groups for display? The stamps are in order of statehood admission on the sheet so we went with that. This was a full sheet of stamps this morning, and going in this order allowed many stamps to stay attached. Don't cry for this sheet's demise, I bought it as part of a discount postage lot.

The display cards I have would hold 9 stamps, or 18 per page. The first thought I had was the 13 original colonies would be logical. Then I realized that there were only 3 more states admitted in the Eighteenth century so I grouped them in. And here's how the page laid out.

Since most of our states were admitted to the union in the 1800s I needed some grouping. Starting with Ohio in 1804, and through the 1820s with Missouri joining the club in 1821, that got us through the 1820s with 8 stamps.

The next state wasn't admitted until Arkansas in 1836, very interesting that there was a 15 year lapse! Then there was a total of 6 states joining through the 1840s with Wisconsin 1848. And those two eras give us a page!

The next era was 1850-1870s with 8 states being added starting with California in 1850. The design of the next few pages gave me an open space, so I included my list of states here.

The 1880s through the end of the 19th century brought 7 more territories to statehood. I wanted to include the first day cover I owned on this page, since Wyoming is one of those states. The cachet is an all purpose Americana theme created by cachet printer John Shue, note his shoe logo on the lower right.

And we end up in the Twentieth Century with the last 5 states. And that's my album! For now.

Yes, I am not seeking out any more material, but if I come across interesting covers I could add some and adjust the pages as I wish.
