Hi Mel,
It's a revenue stamp from Spain from around 1940.
Is the stamp listed in Scotts? I cannot find in Spain. I know sometimes Scott does not list all the stamps that may be found in other catalogues. Figured it was a revenue stamp of some sort, but cannot find listed anywhere. The shield is the same coat of arms for Spain, but this shield is surrounded by an Eagle, while the Spanish shield is topped with a crown.
Any additional information would be appreciated.
Thanks
The Spanish arms were displayed on the eagle of St John during the long period of Franco's rule and for some years afterwards.
In the bottom right is a bundle of arrows and in the bottom left is a yoke. These two items and the eagle were taken from the arms of the Spanish kings around 1500.
The yoke and the bundle of arrows formed the symbol of the Falange.
Nigel,
Many thanks. You provided me information I used to come up with the following:
Sorry about the size. I am still a novice when it comes to computers.
One last question. Is the stamp identified in any of the many catalogues?
Nice clear diagram Mel and a very good size to display here!
I don't have a catalogue that includes Spanish revenues (apart from Forbin for those up to 1915).
However, I see John Barefoot lists one on his web site at £70.00 as:
"FISCALES ESPANOLES (B.8)
by Luis Alemany Indarte.
Catalogue of the revenue stamps of mainland Spain, priced, and illustrated in full colour.
From classics to 2002, includes listings and values for mint and used, imperfs and proofs, the various special types of revenue e.g. consular, medicine, revenues with commercial advertising, regional issues (but not municipals or the colonies).
Hardbound, 470 pages, published 2008.
Currently sold out but will be re-stocked."
It's an Edifil catalogue and I guess it will be in Spanish.
Just an FYI;
MOST revenues are not listed in Scott catalogs, except for the U.S. Specialized.
Revenues are listed there for U.S. and possessions.
Thank you again Nigel.
Just sorting a big pile of foreign stamps and came across this one. I hate it when I cannot ID a stamp. Not in any catalogue that I may have and could not find on the internet. So, now it is ID and will go in a stock book.
And thank you musicman, I am just now learning that about foreign stamps. I specialize in US, Germany and Great Britain and have the catalogs for those countries. Dabble in WW, so easy to get frustrated sometime.
Again thanks for all the help.
Mel
Mel,
I know what you mean about the frustration!
I am a collector of WW revenues, and I often have a hard time ID'ing some of those
revenues.
So, I decided to put together my own WW revenue catalog, covering all countries.
So far, I have about 60+ countries gathered for the catalog, but only about 25 of those are printed and IN the catalog right now.
" .... I decided to put together my own
WW revenue catalog, ...."
And that is probably how most of the
specialty catalogs were started. Let me
be the first to wish you luck with that
Challenge. J.W. Scott as just a vest pocket
dealer pinning stamps to a board with
thumb tacks a hundred and fifty years ago
and look at what Scott's is today.
Charlie
Thanks, Charlie -
I'll take all the (good) luck I can get!
OK I give up. Have researched for 2 days and I am getting cross-eyed. I know the wording is Spanish and that it is probably a special delivery stamp based on my interpretation of the bottom which I believe reads Special Mobile. I have looked at almost all Spanish speaking countries, territories and colonies, but no luck. I know someone on SOR will know what I have.
Thanks for any help.
Mel
