Would you be able to post a hi-resolution jpg of the cover without darkening? I'd love to play around with this and see what we can find
Picture size limitations on posts in the Discussion Board will prevent the posting of a high resolution image.
If you want to do this, you will have to do it directly via email, or save the image somewhere on the internet and post a link to it.

The size limitations are always a challenge, but scanning at a 600 DPI, and using something like FastStone to reduce image size works fine for this type of work
Once you reduce the image size, it is no longer "high resolution" as far as display on the Internet is concerned.
File size / pixel size / Resolution

No problem, I won't assist. I have no time for pedantic semantics. You know full well what I mean. Something zoomable!!
This is an interesting challenge:
I think only at a Forensic Lab you'll be able to see--perhaps--the obliterated text scribbled on that old envelope.
I'm not able to improve the image much with my old picture editor.
This is new to me. I know nothing about it beyond what is visible. It has contents, a letter written on Chinese native paper. The address was written in pencil, and though I have darkened the image I cannot read it. It was sent to Freiburg. The received mark on the reverse is dated December 24, 1900.
What can you tell me about this cover?
