Well drat! Looks like Hurricane Dorian is making a beeline for us on the East Florida Coast and will strengthen once it hits that warm Bahamian water. So we might be doing a full prep, shutters and all. We do our house first then take care of the folks and the sister. Busy busy!

If you are also on the East Coast, stay safe!

Ugh. Here we go again. I hate these storms. They're either terrifying if they hit you or they are depressing if they hit your neighbor's to the north or south.

Be safe Theresa!

re: Hurricane Dorian

Even if you don’t get the eye wall you still get days of torrential rain, flooding and tornadoes. Ahhhh the price we pay to live in paradise, eh?

I dread the mess afterwards. We just had all the trees hurricane trimmed a few months ago so that’s good. Our birdcage on the lanai is a reinforced replacement. The original was destroyed by Frances in 2004. So this house has survived direct hits by a cat 2 and cat 3 storm. It was built to the post Andrew codes ... roof is tied to the concrete foundation and so forth, plus we have those super heavy roof tiles. I’d love to upgrade to hurricane glass windows so we can get rid of the shutters, but dang they are pricy to install. Hmmm if I could just find a penny magenta or a few Hawaiian missionaries in a big mystery box lot!

re: Hurricane Dorian

In Texas, these are called "drought busters". We sure could use a tropical storm to come through (nothing major, mind you as we don't want people hurt and property destroyed), and drop us a few inches of rain. On average (Austin area), we only get 50 rain days per year with average rainfall of 34 inches per year. When it rains here, it rains! When it doesn't, like in the summer, it dries up like a desert.

Anyway, all you in Florida stay safe!

Wow that’s really arid! Just looked up our stats, my town averages 132 rain days per year. During the rainy season ( aptly named) we get rain just about every afternoon, but mornings are almost always sunny.

Hey y'all! We will be prepping the house either tomorrow or Saturday. Fortunately I do have two days off work so I'll be working to get things picked up and put up. Shutters are so much fun! Rolling On The Floor Laughing

Theresa and Ernie and everybody else from anywhere in the state of Florida, be safe and please check in when it all blows over.

I moved to Florida a year ago, and this will be my first hurricane. I am on the West coast, just north of Sarasota, so it looks like I will be safe from a direct hit. The Publix down the street from me was packed this afternoon and they had pretty much sold out of bottled water! Praying for everybody's safety and really hoping it turns away from Florida!

I'm in the direct path and we're all going to die!!!!!!!!!! Laughing

Dang thing slowed down in the warm water and took a slight turn. Aiming for West Palm Beach.

We went out last night to BJ's and was able to get 2 cases of water, coffee, batteries and a water filter for the faucet. 95% of the shutters are up. Taking a rest, grab a bite to eat and head back out to do yard clean up. We have a couple of days, but I really want every thing done today. Lots of cooking tomorrow.

Awwww all your beautiful plantings, purffin. Must break your master gardener hubby’s heart to see the destruction to the flora after a big storm.

This is going to be a huge mess. We went and helped clean up my mom and sisters places in Coral Gables after Andrew and it was like a war zone, downed wires every where. We started taping off exposed wiring for lights (NOT power Lines!) in my sisters condo and the condo manager approached and asked if I knew what I was doing. I showed her my electrician journeyman’s card and all of a sudden she looked madder than a wet hen. She accused my sister of “hoarding” electricians! People get nuts when the infrastructure collapses.

Looks like it is making a beeline for Palm Beach now.

Ps... just downloaded a bunch of Pink Floyd off you tube just in case we lose the internet. The essentials are important lol!

Floyd is good stuff to listen to when the wind and rain are blowing.

Tomorrow I'll be downloading a book into the Kindle, lots of other stuff to do when the lights go out, which according to history will be about 30 minutes into the storm. Florida Flicker and Flash is known for that.

The plants will be what they will be. If they fall down, we will pick them back up. Just hoping the big pine will hold steady. And pray this thing hits in the daytime. I can't see or sleep when one hits at night. Must see what is happening.

Be Safe Everyone!

I was watching the Philadelphia noon news on TV. This morning 20 crews from the Atlantic City, NJ power company left for a mustering point near Florida. A long row of bucket trucks each dragging a trailer, some with pole borers, some with generators. One with a huge trailer of bottled water, followed by a diesel tanker for refueling.

News said more crews were poised to leave if needed. All of the power companies on the east coast have mutual agreements. When Sandy hit New Jersey we saw crews from many southern states in the area.

Since I posted this I watched the 6pm news and saw the Delaware power company deploying about the same forces! Yea, the cavalry is headed in!

re: Hurricane Dorian

I saw that too, Phil. They are now forecasting Dorian to turn more to the east and head up the Florida coastline. That's better than having it run right up the center of the peninsula, but there will still be alot of wind and rain. The good thing is that the dangerous quadrant of the storm will be out in the ocean and not over land.

Some friends reported a substantial number of utility crews (100+) were passing through NC on their way down I-95.

In the latest path, we would be getting some effects by Tuesday.

Please keep us updated on any storm impact. My father in law is in Rockledge, FL just outside of Melbourne so we are quite concerned about the impact that might occur there and have been talking with him. He lived through two hurricanes while in Vero Beach, FL and moved after the second one mostly because of issues with stairs in the condo so that he could get a single story freestanding home and decided to be a bit further from the water as well. He definitely loves living in Florida though. He was a lifelong New Jersey resident until retirement other than serving an enlistment term in the Army. He claims he was perhaps the only member from his training class that was sent to Germany rather than Korea.

26.6 N. That is the number we are watching closely. So far we have seen zero change in latitude ... hopefully within a few hours that will start to change. All the projections say that this monster will turn north, but it is like seeing a big freight train coming at you. The switch to a side rail has been thrown and you know it will turn off onto that side rail once it hits that point, but in the meantime all you see is that big ole engine coming straight towards you. TURN darn it! Nail Biting

re: Hurricane Dorian

The Bahamas are getting pounded. We should've felt the outer bands last night around 11PM. All we are having is a bit of rain. Central Florida will need to be prepared for the rain and wind should Dorian feel like moving. So undecided which way it will go, straight up down North South West? Flip a coin, but move!

I remember Jeanne and the 18 hours of pouring rain and blowing winds. That was a storm that felt like it was never going to end. This is what the people in Bahama are feeling only worse winds and rain.

The neighborhood feels so quite and spooky, like a page from a Stephen King novel.

The best of luck to everyone in the hurricane area. It would be great if it just decided to go away! I know several of the posters are in the path now and are probably very worried. I'm not a religious person so the best I can do is hope (real hard!) that everything comes out OK!

re: Hurricane Dorian

Still under a hurricane warning here in Port St Lucie on the Treasure Coast and we are just starting to get intermittent rain bursts and mild winds. Cloud cover is becoming more dense, but still getting some shadows. We are a bit west of the mandatory evacuation zones, so we get to wait it out at home with our dogs, hopefully safe and sound!

Fortunately, our house is situated so that the least window area is on the west side. It seems counterintuitive, but the counterclockwise rotation means the most damaging winds will approach us from the W or NW. Our HOA has rules about hurricane prep that requires residents to bring in any objects which might become airborne. We have great neighbors who comply and help others prep which makes our neighborhood safer for all.

My son is almost finished with Marine Corps boot camp. He finished the crucible on Saturday and he graduates on September 13th. We just got word that the Marines are evacuating Parris Island and heading to a base in Albany GA for a few days. The graduation ceremonies that are scheduled for this Friday have been canceled and they will be doing an informal online ceremony. This is terrible for families all across the country that have been eagerly awaiting this important event not to mention the considerable expense for airfare and lodging. As far as I know my son's graduation is still on. Oy vey!

Online ceremony ? they should be able to do a parade and ceremony in Georgia, I don't recall people coming to Texas in 1958 when we finished basic trainning.

Hey Phil, yeah, the Marines do things a little different than the army. Graduation at the two recruit depots is a big deal. I was thinking the same thing. Form 'em up in their dress blues, dismiss and call it a day. I guess the little base in GA isn't big enough to handle the influx of visitors.
