If I ever buy that stamp, I'm going to clean the back of all that damage. At least the copy of that stamp that I have now is clean and MNH.
I would sign the front
It can make it much more valuable like this Canada Map stamp signed by the postmaster that sold for 3X the CV value
A ceremony for signing a stamp ????
Can you imagine if everyone who owned a valuable painting or sculpture signed their name on it?
To me, the Swedish Treskilling Yellow should be the world’s most valuable stamp. Like the 1c Magenta, there is only one known copy but, unlike the 1c Magenta, it hasn’t been repeatedly intentionally damaged by collectors over the years.
By the way SFordCa, the ceremony is the 2019 Smithsonian Philatelic Achievement Awards and the stamp signing is just one of the events to be featured. I can’t believe that the Smithsonian is actually going to be part of this heresy.
It is a good thing John Hancock did not collect rare stamps.
Stuart Weitzman, the current owner of the British Guiana 1c magenta, will sign the back of the stamp at a ceremony on October 19 at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. His signature will be added to the signatures and handstamps of several previous owners. Details of the event can be found here:
