What is the main attraction for you? Purchase stamps you cannot get online, social, society meetings, first day?
There's just no substitute for being able to examine items up close and personal. I've also had some great conversations at shows.
I like the atmosphere, mixing with other collectors and dealers. Omaha is a bit of a stretch for me...i remember a long two day train ride coming home...of course my Omaha of 1960 is much different than todays...i doubt if there is still a Zebra lounge on 13th street.
That's it; the kick I get out of meeting dealers, viewing exhibits, etc.
I have read comments elsewhere about strategies for these things. One I recall is to be sure to hit the dealers on the final day. Especially if you're hopping for large lots. You can pick up a bargain from a dealer who doesn't want to haul it back home.
i use that approach after lunch on the second day...but if you wait too long...its gone !
"Big Boy" has been crisscrossing Iowa all this month. This is what you will see, Anglophile, as here is a photo from northern Iowa on July 18th...

I just got home from watching "Big Boy" stop at the Main Street crossing in Elkhart, Iowa for a 15 minute stop. His arrival time was 2:35 PM, about 35 minutes late from the tentative schedule, see link above. I have seen a similar train engine on static display in a museum in Duluth, Minnesota, as they used to run these big steam engines to move iron ore cars from the iron mines over to Lake Superior. "Big Boy" is like two steam engines married into one. His boiler plate said "Schenectady Works - 1941." You could feel the heat radiating off the boilers, smell the oil and grease, and watch it drip water out of it's pores, as it was alive. Much more impressive than seeing the one in Duluth. The steam whistle was extremely loud! If you are at APS Stampshow in Omaha this Friday, it is scheduled to arrive at 7:45 PM at 12th and Cuming Street, but possibly later as it was today. I thought it was well worth going to see, hear, and smell "Big Boy" in person.
Linus
Craig, I was down there most of the afternoon today, and will need a couple more 1/2 days to take it all in. This is my first national-level exhibition, and I was rather pleased at what I found. But I guess it is everything you would expect: friendly people and lots of stamps.
Caught part of the first-day of issue ceremony for the Military Working Dog stamps, made some purchases, looked at a few of the exhibits (wow!), and reviewed several lots for the live auctions. I'll try to post some pictures later.
Not sure when I can get back down there. Maybe our paths will cross.
-Steve
Welcome to Omaha! Looks like the red-carpet treatment.
The First Day Ceremony for the new set of four Military Working Dogs stamps.
Awards that will be presented. That's a lot of bling. And yes, behind the awards table is the big (solid) ball of stamps from Boy's Town that made it into Ripley's Believe it or Not.
Children's area. Saw a couple dozen kids while there. Some were collecting the stickers from all the booths to complete their Passport.
A sample of the exhibition displays. I didn't realize how extensive some of these entries are--spanning multiple, multiple panels.
Tomorrow night's auction features some U.S. stamps I'm interested in, so I may have more pictures then.
Steve,
I was there four hours today, had to leave after some food I had at the concession gave me really bad heartburn. Sure I'll be up and ready tomorrow after I sleep it off.
There were some naysayers among the dealers about bringing the show here. They all did gangbusters today. Every seat was filled most of the day at some of the tables.
Might be nice to meet up but not sure how, I won't have my phone with me. If you can suggest a tine/place tomorrow I'd be open.
Thanks for sharing the pictures from the show! I really appreciate the opportunity to see them and hope to attend one of the large shows in the future. Maybe even one of the international shows at some point. It is a bucket list item for sure.
Craig, I’ll check in with Herb from Tuva Enterprises when I get there. Also, if you are there for the live auction in the evening, I've got bid number 21. Not sure if/when I’ll get there, but I hope to!
-Steve
Thanks for posting some images. For a show, there does not seem to be very many posted.
The show deserved a new issue better than the Military Dogs.
Al, There were enough people there to make it look like an event was going on, but it was not crowded. Easy to move around. Dealers were usually busy, though.
One nice find was a table about 30' long with several hundred albums and folders of low-mid quality, in the $5 to $100 range. I picked up six that totalled $95 and got them for $85 (without bargaining). Out of the six, four were nice stockbooks marked from $7 to $15 of the type sold at Hobby Lobby for $15--and they were full of stamps.
-Steve
The subject was fine, the design was not. Last year it was dragons.
I for one would enjoy seeing more pictures from the show,
if you have them.
That was great to share the pics. Speaking for myself..i think the APS shows are the best. Better than the mega shows i have attended at Madison Sq. Garden and the Javits Center.
Great Pics!
Thank you!!
That Pan-Am cover is crazy/cool!!!
On a side note;
I know it's necessary, but I hate seeing those muzzles on the dogs....
Hi Anglophile:
Re: your Omaha APS show photos, I also took a photo of that Pan AM Clipper cover addressed to FDR. Attractive, but that is the largest cover I have seen in a exhibit! It is huge.
Don (FF)
On the road heading home from the Omaha show. I made a few satisfying purchases and had a good time looking at the dealers offerings and the exhibits. The show looked well organized and well run. A good venue, spacious and easy to get to. I thought the attendance was steady, but never crowded during the hours I as there. It will be interesting to see the official assessment. Prices at the concession stand were high, as they usually are at public events.
Glad I went!
Don (FF)
I have seen more photos posted than ever for a stamp show by visitors and APS on the various online venues.
Looks like Chris (Anglophile) and Don (FrequentFlyer) weren't the only ones interested in that enormous cover!
For any who don't recognize "The Oracle of Omaha," that is the one and only Warren Buffett. A local news crew did an informal interview with him in the aisle between several booths. Unfortunately, I missed him...
-Steve
WOW, seeing Mr. Buffett there would seem to suggest that he collects stamps. Does any one know and if so what he collects. Except for a few unique items he's one of the few people in the world who could complete it. I'd love to see it.
Mitch, in the interview he said that he collected in his youth, and that he still has his Scott International Volume 1. Yes, he collected Big Blue! Maybe there is hope for me yet.

That was very, very cool to see and quite a nice picture. He looks very happy and relaxed at the show.
I can't believe nobody has started a thread on this, it is just days away now. Is anyone else on here going? I plan to be there every day for at least a few hours.
Hope to see some of you there.
