I am interested in a specialty album for my Mexico collection, currently use Scott but would like pages for some of the varieties (district overprints, etc) on earlier issues.
One such publication I am aware of provides that coverage but since it is published in Mexico, it is annotated entirely in Spanish. I can pick my way through written Spanish but am wondering.. is there a way I can get English translations of some of the write ups, maybe by scanning the pages and using on line translation applications?

PS I found this:

https://www.onlineocr.net/

Any opinions?

OCR software is not perfect.

Online translation is less than perfect.

You're gonna get some gobbledygook ... and that's on a good day.

If you do scan/OCR/gTranslate, I'd mount the translations in the album - on the back of the preceding page or on a new glassine interleave - so that you can swap them out, some day, should better translations come along.

Cheers,

I agree that all or nearly all of the available options are less than ideal. You can try Google Translate (https://translate.google.com/) but it will probably be rather frustrating I suspect. One big issue is that there are likely to be philately-specific terms being used which will invariably stump almost any translating system. And that would likely include someone fluent in Spanish unless he or she is, in fact, a stamp collector or dealer.

Craig, since you are an APS member, you can contact the APS Translation Services Department to see if they will be able to help you. It's usually free of charge.

This mini dictionary helps with some things but is by no means complete

here

Problem with translation software is it generally lacks any sense of context and just strings best guesses of individual word translations together. This occasionally works but it often gives gibberish as well.
