I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

If memory serves me, and most of the time is doesn't, I believe someone in the recent past was looking for precanceled stamps on covers. If so, will that person contact me via PM. If I am just guessing, never mind.

Edit to add that the covers are all straight bars, straight bars with "Nonprof Org" or just "Nonprof Org".

Silence in the face of adversity is the father of complicity and collusion, the first cousins of conspiracy..

That must be a challenging quest, since to be sure
the precanceled stamp would have to be "tied"
to the cover, otherwise how would you know
it had not been added in a blank spot
or one recently vacated by a skip ?

re: Who's Looking For Precancels?

Interesting that this came up in discussion - the August issue of the American Philatelist (APS)just arrived yesterday and it has an article in it called, "Why Are These Precanceled Stamps Postmarked?"

by Vincent Centonze.

Description says,

"Examining the usages and handling of precanceled stamps,
especially with respect to mailer's postmarks, is an part
of modern US history. Vince explores the reasons why
some were canceled again along the way."

I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but a quick scan of it looks to be interesting.

Randy

haven't read the article, but.....

let's remember that envelopes with no stamps get cancelled, as do envelopes with seals and cinderellas. Once in the mail stream, things happen.

In addition, not all carriers know the rules.

Very true....

I imagine these are some of the ideas the writer was referring to

as stated in his description;

"....reasons why SOME were cancelled along the way."

I would venture that not ALL reasons will be explained.
