Hello Harvey
It is always interesting when you win a bid for the first time at an auction. In my experience, the seller will usually contact you to let you know the total cost which would include shipping etc.
I have a lot of regular UN stamps, which I got in a collection recently. I don't collect them myself, but, it was one of those times that a seller wanted the buyer to take all. So, I took a chance and bought the whole collection. I am glad I did because the countries I do collect in it were well worth the investment.
Happy collecting

I'm not a huge fan of UN stamps, I collected them since they go with my US album. I'm complete to 1989 and stopped there. Then I discovered the Swiss and Dutch officials that connect to the UN and the League of Nations - those I really like. I found pages for them and stuck them after the UN section. They are much more interesting than the fairly boring UN stuff! I'll keep checking out the future auctions, I was quite impressed with some of the stuff. As I said, the prices are fair and the procedure is easy. Of course I might not get the items, but that's part of the fun. I don't win every auction I enter on E-Bay either, I actually just lost a large Swiss lot that I bid on, maybe next time!
Don't forget to check to see if the same seller might have some approval books listed too. Most are willing to combine all your purchases to save on shipping.

Hi Harvey. Welcome to StampoRama.
About auctions: I used to get really uptight waiting for eBay auctions to end, and often I would get sniped in the last .00000000000001 second. Grrrr! But....
It's just not worth getting upset over a lost auction. Spilled milk and all that. Several years ago I decided that I would bid the absolute maximum I could afford. If I won, so much the better, if I lost I'd survive, knowing that I couldn't have afforded competing with the winner.
The StampoRama auctions are a lot easier, because any bid before the auction ends extends the auction another 24 hours, and you can choose to be notified that you've been outbid (or that you have won).
Hope you enjoy StampoRama. I've been a member since its inception. Its collective membership provides a virtual philatelic encyclopedia at your fingertips-on-your-keyboard.

To correct Bob's comment about late bids, here is how the system works. This is from the Auction Tutorial:
"Late Bids - Bids placed within 10 hours of a lot's scheduled closing that become the high bid will extend the closing time for that lot for an additional 10 hours from the time that the new high bid was placed. The 10 hour time extensions continue as long as a new high bid is placed. Otherwise, the lot will close on the extended date and time stated in the lot."
Hi! I joined SoR about 2 months ago and finally bid in my first auction - a few Swiss officials to add in with my UN collection. I have no idea what happens when, or if, I win. I assume the seller gets in touch. I hope I didn't tick off the person I over bid. I am new to your auctions and am carrying over my experience with other on-line auctions. There was some good stuff there. One of you had some wonderful US "duck stamps" I would have been very interested in if they were singles instead of blocks. I'll make sure I check out future auctions - the prices are fair and the procedure is easy!
