Back in the 1970s i had a modest Netherlands album and probably two second hand Scott International albums. This has grown (through great deals) to about 30 stamp albums and another 15 cover albums of Guatemala and Netherlands and colonies. When do i get to look at these collections? Only when i receive a new item and open that specific album. I doubt if i am any happier than when i knew where i could put my hands on my album.Sad

re: Can we sometimes get too ambitious ?

I make it a practice, and set time aside, to leaf through every album I own at least once every 3 months. While enjoyable, the primary purpose is to check the condition of the stamps and ‘air’ out the pages.
With 50+ albums this does indeed take some time but this also serves to maintain my intrinsic enjoyment in the hobby and keeps me reminded of what I own and what I may need.

re: Can we sometimes get too ambitious ?

I like leafing through my stuff, but I don't have as much to go through as you guys do. One album each for Poland, US and Canada, two for Russia and volumes I, II, IIIA and IIIB of Scott's International. I find that's enough for me for a while. If I had 50 albums I would find it overwhelming, but I am an ex-antique dealer so I have about 20 collections of other things. So I guess I'm not that much different after all - at least you don't have 400 oil lamps to take care of!!

re: Can we sometimes get too ambitious ?

When I started seriously, it was not too ambitious to collect every stamp less than a dollar postally used, as there were only about 100,000 or so. But then the explosion began but now there are about 500,000 that meet the adjusted criteria (Postally used under $5.00) and CTOs and favor cancels are the only way to get there. In some ways many properly cancelled issues are a pipe dream and unused have to be admitted.
Along the way lots of higher values were acquired to complete a set. I am confident that I have at least 200,000 different issues mounted, and several file drawers of "Someday I'll get to them" stamps. In fact during the last six to eight months while we were moving and my eyes were being treated with injections, I have built up a couple of "temporary" file boxes that I plan to get serious on soon. Then there are the Machins with about 2,000 different lited (Deegam Handbook ) examples and boxes and binders of shades and minor fly specs.
I may have to live forever to mount them all.
To answer the question, yes, we not only can, but have often passed that red line years ago.

Its the "file Drawers" (really plastic tubs, wooden cigar boxes, computer paper boxes) of stamps that task me. I am not yet a minimalist to toss things out.

re: Can we sometimes get too ambitious ?

I find myself in that same category of not looking at my albums unless I'm adding something. I'm up to 12 volumes of New Jersey at this point, and still adding on a regular basis. The last time I added something to my "A-B" album, I sat down and went through it. I was impressed at how well the collection was taking shape. Sometimes you need to just stop and enjoy what you've got!
