Very strange story. The woman claims her stamp was worth big bucks and takes it to the RMPL for appraisal. She just knew it was valued in the thousands. I'd bet she couldn't be bothered to check in a stamp catalog. She now claims the guy there kept it and told her he was throwing it away.
Up to that point it sounds like a typical nonsensical situation, perhaps triggered by some of the ridiculous Ebay listings for common stamps we've discussed on here. But.. the Library now says they let this guy go. Go figure.

If the employee kept the property and/or threw it away, he had no right to do that since it wasn't his property. The RMPL probably will have to pay the lady big money based solely on her claim, if the stamp is no longer there. They should also see if they can find if the lady and the former employee split any payment to her from the company.

I am sure this is how so many US Scott 596's are lost.

I do not automatically assume that the lady was clueless. No matter what the stamp was or was not worth, anyone who cares about the hobby should not be telling people to throw away stamps. If the stamp(s) has no significant market value, they should have been encouraged to start the hobby.
If this person was a paid employee or a volunteer, they should have been vetted and trained before representing the Library.

And other similar stamps are not worth the original face value.
