Hi Dave,
The Russians took control of Bulgaria in September 1944 and Bulgaria straight away declared war on Germany and the other Axis powers.
The stamps with the aeroplane overprints were issued in February 1945 (according to SG and Michel) while Bulgaria was still at war.
SG describes the two overprints as a Heinkel He 111H (climbing to the left) and an Arado Ar 240 bomber.
Thanks Nigel, that is useful. I think I'll add them to my WWII section for Bulgaria.
Anyone know what the symbols mean?
I'm assuming they are cyrillic and an acronym for something.
Cheers, Dave.
Hi Dave,
I believe these are the initials "OF" of the Fatherland Front (roughly "Otechestven Front" in Bulgarian).
This was the political grouping which seized power in September 1944 and declared war on Germany.
Here's a Wikipedia link which shows their arms and flag, both with these two letters:

Incredible help, thanks Nigel!
Dave
Here's how brilliant Nigel is...
I just looked at my post and realized I had forgotten to upload the scan.
Now that's a knowledgeable philatelist!
Dave
An excellent point, Dave!

I hope he doesn't mind my saying this, but on a previous stamp discussion board, we respectfully referred to him as "Nigelpedia".
A true resource for all of us.
Apologies, Nigel, if I have pushed too far. I genuinely consider it to be the ultimate compliment.
Not sure if this was before or after the Soviets moved in.
And not sure why the overprint and what the symbols mean.
Trying to figure out if this is relevant to my collection of post-WW2 stamps that provide a narrative to the post-war occupations, country changes, etc.
Many thanks, Dave.
