Q/ Is that a shiny black surface?
Q/ If 'yes', do you fiddle the light & positioning so that it is not reflected back into your eyes?
Cheers,

Contrast is good. My solution is just add light! It is hard for me to read some text in catalogs without extra light. Scott catalogs are not printed on as good of paper as my SG catalog.
My retina doctor has an eye chart printed on a white board and much easier to read than the lower contrast projection systems.

That may be why at the VA eye clinic I keep being told
that my vision is not deteriorating, when at home I need
more light and more powerful reading glasses. I think
I will suggest that the screen with he letters be used
with different background.
I will anticipate the usual disbelief, so I may have to
push it a few times, hoping that one of the interns with
a open mind will see if there is any research on the subject.
The VA eye doctor has also told me that my eyesight has been great the last few years. Yesterday, he told me that my eyesight had deteriorated so I am getting new glasses finally.
Hi Everyone;
@ ikeyPikey
Good question, yes I adjust the light source. The Scott catalogs are now printed on glossy paper. I use a standard articulated arm drafting lamp with two 18" flourescent tubes. These over-priced more modern lights touted to be closer to true daylight, have very poor means for such adjustments.
the best position I have found is to get the light source just above my head several inches and just behind where my eyes would be. Then the glare goes away.
still just sortin'....

My left eye is very bad everything is very blurred ,going in for cataract surgery next Thursday I hope it fixes the problem .My wife had her's done years ago she couldn't believe the difference it made to her sight .
Brian
Hi Brian,
I had cataract surgery on both eyes a couple of years ago and it has made a tremendous difference to my sight.
I can now see at distance without glasses or lenses for the first time ever and I was amazed how much brighter colours were after the surgery.
I was also able to perceive a much wider range of colours again, so blues and yellows were much more distinct than they had been in recent years.
I still have some astigmatism and I need reading glasses but the surgery has significantly improved my quality of life.
Good luck with your surgery!
Nigel
Brian,
The best of luck with your upcoming surgery. I had my left eye done last week and the result is simply amazing. It seems they had been gradually getting worse over the past several years so that I did not notice it that much until recently. The eye I had done was the worse of the two by far but now I see how really bad the right eye is. As Nigel has said your quality of life will be greatly improved, I can't wait to get the other eye done in a few weeks.
One thing that is not generally known is that when one reaches a "certain age " eyesight can improve then deteriorate again between consecutive eye tests.
I have not very good eyesight, but one thing I have found is that artificial light seriously diminishes resolution. Other than when u/v light is required I do all my "stamp work" in daylight , and in winter in the middle part of the day, and while sometimes I struggle, so far I have not had any insurmountable problem.
...... oh and keep your spectacles clean, you can't see anything through 2 centimetres of accumulated gunge !

Well I have had the surgery WOW what a difference ,I can acually see properly now everything was blurred before ,made driving much easier and safer the repaired eye is better than the one I have had to rely on up to now.
Brian
Great news Brian!
Brian i am just finishing up the drops for the second eye..looks like i will still need glasses..but everything sure does look brighter and clearer !
Hi Philb
I am on the waiting list to get my right eye done now ,the eye they did the lens they put in has a blue tinge that makes white look brighter my other eye every thing white has a cream look .
I went for an eye test after i got the all clear from my surgeon and he removed the stitch he put in as the cataract was so thick.I used to have to wear glasses to drive don't hve to any more ,my new glasses are still bifocals, optician said if your more comfortable wearing them all the time instead of having to take them on and off when you need to read will make them bifocals.
Brian
Malcolm,
You are right, eyesight is a funny thing. Right now I use two pairs of bifocals - one for distance, one for close up - but I never use the ones for close up, as it is now clearer with no glasses! Reading and even computer work is clearer without the glasses (depending a bit on the screen and position). My phone is much easier to see without my glasses, and nearly all of my stamp work is done sans specs.
I do need to get my distance vision fixed, though.

To anyone here who has had cataract surgery: Did you start with very strong myopia? I am at the point where I could benefit from surgery, but it entails a higher risk of retinal detachment, due to my high degree of myopia (elongated eyeball).
I wonder if anyone else was given a similar warning, and how your surgery went.
I'm legally blind. I have a lot of specialized equipment to work on ny stamps. My newest "toy" is a tablet size electronic magnifier. It is amazing.
I have a couple of items in this link that I use for my stamps. Lions clubs are very eager to help people purchase equipment for hobbies to get the most of their residual sight.

Vinman, you will know when its time..only you can make the decision !Brian, i had been wearing trifocals...and all of a sudden they did not work..panic, i could not read small print..which was never a problem for a guy who has been nearsighted since 13.i will see the outcome of my examination at the end of this month..i hope i can get a prescription for near sighted only...but would settle for bifocals...i have not been using glasses to drive. Took my last Prednazone drop this morning ,,,no more drops !
Hi Everyone;
Here is a tip for those of us with eye problems and focus of images. An optometrist confirmed that it is easier on the eyes if what you are viewing is higher in contrast. I found a great solution, that is available at Uline, a supplier of shipping materials and work related furniture.
I collect world wide, and often have to sort thousands of stamps at one time. Where can this be done in a small apartment? I'm so glad you asked! Uline sells folding tables, that after the legs fold up they can be folded in the middle. The one I ordered is 72" x 30" x 29" tall. So when folded it is 30" x 36" small.
Even better it is available in black. When stamps are displayed on a black surface with very bright lighting the result is very good contrast and much easier on my eyes.
So now I will have the perfect place to sort, that can be stored in the back of my closet when I'm done, and is easier on my eyes, thus reducing eye fatigue, and sorting errors, due to poor focus.
Still just sortin'....
