Pooh, if you google the words there are a number of sites with illustrations and descriptions, some good some ruddy awful as websites go.

letterpress plates were assembled cliches of 100-200 units. lead units that eroded from inks and pressure over time - so were replaced.

most often the bottom row was first to go ...
