I was watching a documentary type show on tv about the Yankee Division...which was largely made up of National Guard Units from Maine,New Hampshire etc:. They arrived late in the war but just in time for the Germans last push to win the war and took very heavy casualties. There were native American tribal members in the division that were killed, died of the Spanish flu or were wounded but they were given no recognition or medals because they were not United States citizens until 1924. How crazy is that..if you wear the same uniform and take the same chances as everyone else.
