During the Civil War in Yemen during the 1960s, the Royalists to the Imam tried to separate the northern part of Yemen from the rest following the proclamation of the independent Yemen Republic. They called it The Mutawakelite Kingdom of Yemen, and issued stamps to try to legitimize their claim. It didn't work. Michel lists the stamps.
Thank you Michael. This helps more than you might realize. I will list Yemen Republic under Approval at 7 cents ea. and Mutawakelite Kingdom of Yemen under Approval at 5 cents ea., and try to forget about Yemen as quickly as possible. Actually, the early stamps of Yemen Republic (circa 1940) are quite interesting. Thank you.
Yemen's stamp history is pretty complicated particularly if you include Aden/South Arabia/South Yemen in the south as well as the Kingdom/YAR in the north.
The YAR came about suddenly after a coup d'état in 1962 which started the long civil war within Yemen.
Until then Yemen had been a Kingdom.
I'm guessing that the "Yemen Republic (Combined)" referred to the country formed in 1990 when the YAR and the separate "Yemen People's Democratic Republic" (i.e. South Yemen) joined together.
Sadly they are once again deep in a terrible civil war.
Linn's had a multi-part article a year or so ago regarding the philatelic history of all that Nigel mentioned. It was perhaps the best article I ever read in Linn's. It was an attempt to politic Scott to list many of the stamps that were issued during that period, including the "sand dune" sheikdoms. Many of the stamps issued were valid for postage.
The article was serialized in several of the Linn's monthly issue. Sorry, but I don't recall which ones. I may have posted about it at the time. That thread will be lurking about here.
And Michel catalogs most of the 'sand dunes' in their Naher Osten volume. I do pick up collections of them from time to time, if the stamps are mostly mint and complete sets. Some of the issues I really like and I keep those, and the others I list for sale referencing the Michel number. I've sold a fair number to collectors in Europe, who are acquainted with the Michel catalog and are less influenced by the Scott decision not to list them.
Michel has a "Gulf States" catalog that is in English. It's a good reference for all the issues. Older editions of the catalog can be found at a discount. I think 2006 was the first one.
Minkus issued a "Trucial States" catalog in the late 1970s. It's not a thorough as Michel, but might be good enough for some. I see it offered now and then on Ebay, and it is often found in dealer box lots.
Michael, I believe that the most recent German-language edition is more complete than the English-language one. They do continue to add or correct entries. A few that I couldn't find in an earlier edition did show up in the most recent one.
But the English edition is easier to read, at least for me!
My catalog is 2006. I know they have published at least one more of the Gulf States catalog (2013).
Scott 2023 lists a Southern Yemen on page 869 but that part of the book 6B is about Yugoslavia. The Yemen pages (~ page 889 on) cover a bit about the Kingdom, North Yemen, and the People Republic of Yemen.
Where are the pages for Southern Yemen pages?
Here is a map. The original website is gone but many images available through archive.org.

I was looking at an old APS journal, Dec 1968
My question for the day. I can't find a good explanation for the difference between Yemen Republic and Mutawakelite Kingdom of Yemen. Why aren't the Mutawakelite Kingdom of Yemen stamps listed in Scott's? And then I run into "YEMEN REPUBLIC (COMBINED)" on Ebay. ?? Thank you very much.
