The American Bank Note Company printed the Guatemala small Quetzal stamps of 1879 & 1881. Some of muy favorite stamps.
"The relevant time period is 1879 to 1894."
Thanks all for your advice, I learned a few things from this thread. As I'm not a member of the APS, I will seek out local philatelic libraries and see what I can find.
I did a search on my years old Scott e-catalogue and only found 19 references to American Bank Note company. Apparently Scott (at least in 2009) only listed situations where it was imprinted on the stamp. This search yielded stamps in the date range 1879-1940ish. I also found a couple Chinese issues which was new information to me.
As noted by philb, there are issues where ABNC did the printing but did not imprint the stamp with their name. I looked up that particular Guatemalan issue and there was nothing mentioning the printer in Scott.
Definitely a lot more research required.
I share your interest in ABNC printed issues, especially those of Latin America. I have been accumulating sets from collections for many years now, but have not gotten around to making want list, nor organizing what I have.
You will find that Stanley Gibbons catalogs do a better job of giving information on the printers and designers of stamps. The Guatemala quetzal issue is clearly shown in SG as printed by ABNC.
Older SG catalogues can be purchased for reasonable prices from abebooks.com and probably Amazon.com
How can you not love it?

Hi all,
I've recently decided to seek out stamps produced by the ABNC, specifically those produced outside Canada and the USA, which I believe to be predominantly Latin American countries.
I've found the odd reference via Google searches and there appears to be inter-related philatelic articles and books. I've not found the actual books or articles though so unless I can get my hands on these I'm not sure what information they would actually contain.
ATA doesn't list this as a topical either. Ultimately I'm looking for any guidance or suggestions on where I can find more details. I have come across a number of issues organically but even to get a sense of the year range/countries to look for would be helpful, as I look to build up this collection.
