Well, you'll be 25 degrees warmer than us in central Texas! But then, January is the coldest month of the year here.

That is a lot warmer than our current minus 27c, minus 35 with wind chill but at least it is sunny and supposed to get to plus one on Thursday. Guess the snow is going to stay awhile.

VERY HOT CHOCOLATE, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's warmer in Denver, Colorado (39 F - no wind chill), than it is in Round Rock, Texas (35 F - wind chill at 32 F)! Plus, the sun is shining in Denver. Round Rock is getting drenched in rain. I guess one silver lining is that at least it's not ice...

Happy New Year to everyone!
2019 should be a good year, 2018 was pretty darn good to me!

Big family announcement. We learned right after Thanksgiving that my daughter (the mother of my 1 year old granddaughter) was pregnant. It was early so she wanted to keep it quiet. The day after Christmas she went to the doctor and.... found out she is pregnant with TWINS!

There are twins in the family, my wife has twin sisters... and her sister's husband is a twin. And of course they had twins!

Life continues to be interesting...

Antonio, you're right. Times flies and we soon forget. If you're looking, I guess there is quite alot with which to find fault regarding La Florida but I love it here, I really do. I lived in upstate New York for four years with all of the slush, dirty snow, iced over windshields and the cold, the bone chilling cold. Nah, not for me.

Tom, congrats! Twins. That is very exciting. Cant wait to have a grandchild or three.

You may have asked yourself... "self, Tom hasn't been here all weekend! Where could he be?" I seriously doubt anyone missed me.

I was participating in an annual model building event.. The 13th Annual 24 Hour Build. We crazy model builders get together via Facebook and build models for 24 hours straight during the Daytona Rolex 24 Hour race. The challenge is to build a someone reasonable model to completion in that time frame. It's all for fun. We simplify our builds and accept results under our ability... as we say it's fun to build like a sixth grader. From back in the days when we'd get a new model and finish it before bedtime!

Anyway, I took an old Monogram Ford Model A woody wagon kit, and converted it into a custom pickup. Yes, that's all plastic and everything is painted on top of preparation and primer. And I love to dry brush wood grain!

When you ask yourself who would do such a thing? We had 110 participants around the globe. Mainly a US and Canadian event, but at least three Aussies, a Brit and one from Norway, guys we know from years on the Internet, much like here, and a lot of them we know in person from attending shows and such. We do it for the camaraderie, and the personal challenge of knowing you completed the task!

We post progress photos on the website all through the night. There is nothing like posting at 3am and instantly people are responding! There are plenty of pitfalls and cars out of the running all night long! One guy melted his car body trying to dry paint in his oven. Others hit a major snag and some just gave up and went to bed. I've been doing the challenge since 2013, finishing my model 4 of the 7 years. I've always finished those within a week of so afterwards. And this year I had a surprise, I won the "Participant Award".

Yes, we sleep much of Sunday. I finished mine by 11am, took photos and posted my completion proof at 11:30am. And I fell asleep in my chair shortly thereafter! It's fun and we are looking forward to next year.

Speaking of buildng like a sixth-grader, there are certain songs that, when I hear them, I am instantly transported back in time to my model-building desk. The one that immediately comes to mind is Tommy James and the Shondells, Crystal Blue Persuasion.

Now, excuse me while I go pull it up on youtube for a listen...

Thanks Guys! I had a lot of fun with this build!

Quote:

Because I was a good model builder in the sixth grade! And now I'm good at fixing mistakes! Happy In my case it's the lack of prep work, no clear coat on the paint and short cuts.. like the brown treads on the fenders... I would have sprayed those on a serious build, but I took a chance and just brush painted them. And they don't look half bad!

The speed of the build causes issues you wouldn't have on a regular build. I had parts fall off because my CA glue hadn't dried completely. I did get my fingers into it and got some glue / paint smudges on the model. I just was careful to polish those off.

Quote:

"But those hubcaps are horrendous!"

It was typical in the 1950s, and now with the retro movement, to use fancy wheel covers on street rods, these were off a 1941 Plymouth.

Image Not Found

I've been building this series of Ford Model As from old Monogram kits that came out in 1961. The two on the left came from original era kits, while the two on the right are from more modern reissues of those early kits.

The blue chopped roadster was built from a destroyed old kit some kid had built. The white phaeton racer uses all the custom parts from that 1961 kit. The number 60 is in honor of that milestone birthday I celebrated this year.

NICE collection, Tom!

In the realm of full-size builds, son Charlie and I are making GOOD progress on my 1965 Coronet 2-door sedan, destined to be a Super Stock tribute car. A couple of recent pics:

Image Not Found
Image Not Found

We finished narrowing the rear axle (Dana 60 with 4.88 gears) last week. This went along with "stretching" the rear tubs to fit the maximum tire allowed by Nostalgia Super Stock rules - 10.5x33. Those are Studebaker wheel centers (to hold the vintage hubcaps) on custom-width hoops. And, fiberglass front fenders.

Charlie is also upgrading the factory (inner headlight delete) grille modification, to his own (higher) standard.

Next big job is the chrome-moly roll cage.

Our overall goal is to have this car weigh less than 3000 lb and run in the 10s. Yes, it's getting a built Hemi.

SO nice to have a metal fabricator in the family!

Great Project Paul!
It's good to see your son modifying the grill. Mopar brightwork wasn't the greatest quality in that time frame. I have a 1966 Valiant NOS left side grill, still in the box, and the quality is less than perfect!

We are finally getting some of that crazy cold weather from Canada. Tonight will be -30F/-34C with a strong wind. Hunkering down with a large mug of hot tea, some blankets and a good movie. The good news is that by the weekend we will have a reprieve as tropical winds blow up and put us near the melting point of water. Likely it will feel like summer.

Just about everything was closed down today and will be tomorrow. Even the Postal Service is down tomorrow. Time to hibernate and work on my stamps.

It's below freezing right now in the Philly suburbs. We had a "wintry mixture" yesterday that started out as snow, turned to rain, and back to snow again, making for a slushy commute, maybe an inch. Overnight that all froze solid. On my wife's car the doors were all frozen shut so I had to go outside and manhandle them for her!

Scott, a comfort that you were able to spend the last year with your dad. My dad didn't quite make it to 95, but came close. I'm glad that I got to spend a little time with him, even though we live several postal zones apart. He especially delighted in his grand children, and my daughter, the youngest of the lot, always gave him great joy. Sorry for your loss and happy for your last year.

It is 33F (1C) right now. Wind chill is in the 20s. We had a thunderstorm with pea-sized hail that turned everything white. Some more wet, wintry weather is coming. It's not supposed to get out of the 30s until Sunday when temperatures should return to normal (50s), but it is going to rain. I'm not going to the flea market this weekend!

We had an unusual 8" of snow on last Sunday which has yet to clear from the ground and bushes although most roads had begun to clear until about two hours ago when it started snowing again in earnest with an expected accumulation of 4" to 8" with spots of up to 12" forecast between 3:00 PM and 11:00 PM tonight and additional snow expected on Sunday as well. It is significantly impacting normal rush hour traffic in the Seattle area. Snow has been falling solidly for the last hour and a half without a break.

Radio announcer at noon today said that the local Fred Meyer discount and grocery stores looked like war zones from people stocking up and that he spent 20 minutes in line at Costco for gas without successfully getting gas before having to give up and leave for his show this morning around 9 AM. Whew

Sounds like everyone is having a heatwave, here is our current forecast in degrees C for tonight,

Quote:

"Clear. Increasing cloudiness overnight. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 38 with temperature rising to minus 31 by morning. Wind chill minus 49 in the evening and minus 40 overnight. Frostbite in minutes."

Tomorrow is expected to be a little warmer with a high of minus 21, low 31, then just to please us with our snow shovels, snow again on Monday. Oh well guess I need the exercise.
I'm making up a few pages with Clives "Album Easy" and wish the Royal Mail website would be consistent and give stamp dimensions for all issues, not just odd ones here and there. It's ok if I have a stamp for the issue but not otherwise.

re: SOR 2019 Diner now open for business

We ended up with 8" of snow on Friday/Saturday, another 3" on Sunday, and about 2" on Monday. The news is claiming this breaks a record going back to the 1920's! Fortunately we only lost power for about a four hour period on Friday evening and haven't had any problems since then. Applause Major roads cleared but side streets are very snow and ice filled still. I have been working off and on through the weekend and today setting up remote access for clients to their office networks so having power has been very helpful. Only had one client where I could not get remote accessibility setup due to the rather unusual firewall they have in place which we have requested before that they replace.

Some areas to the south of Seattle got more snow on Sunday and Monday than where we live although we appear to have gotten more on Friday/Saturday.

It has been interesting but it would be fine for it to go away now. Big Grin

No worries here in the Philly 'burbs! We've had a couple of 1" "storms of the century" recently, but nothing that I even broke out the snow shovel for. I have yet to fire up the snow blower this season! (oh, I may have jinxed it!)

I keep trying to win the Linns monthly cartoon caption contest. I just read the February 25 issue and saw that my entry was chosen as a runner-up. I'm getting closer!

Also, the USPS announced the stamps to be issued for the anniversary of the completion of the trans-continental railroad. It's a strip of three, and they look real nice!

We finally dropped TV service from Spectrum poackage (our Internet/TV provider_ so just Internet and Internet Phone. The price just kept going up almost every month. The one charge I did not like was the $13 charge to obtain channels I could get over the air. I realize this is not Spectrum's fault. I can get all the channels (and few more sub-channels) with a cheap antenna.

We were getting 150 Mbs/sec Internet speeds but now I just get around 80Mps with new setup. This speed change was not unexpected and do notice the different. The good news though is the upload speeds are still over 20Mbps.

Ding-dong the wicked witch is dead...
I am glad that satellite and cable no longer have the monopoly they once enjoyed. My streaming TV service is $40 per month for 50+ HD channels (including 4k), cloud based DVR style program management, movies on demand, plenty of extra sports and other entertainment packages to choose from.

For folks who do not want to pay anything, there is also a large number of free streaming channels.

Yea. I do not watch sports either. The big one behind a lot of this is ABC Disney. Besides the Disney and ABC groups, Disney owns ESPN and A&E and all used as leverage to extract more fees from streamers.

I have Roku so lots of options.

Managed over the last couple of days to get the vegetable patch tilled over, now need to rake it level, tidy the edges and get some growing going. Trouble is we are due snow in the next twenty four hours and a cold week with below freezing nights coming. Tender plants have to wait until June before setting out.Image Not Found

Roll on tomorrow.

Off for the viewing day at the local auction house.
The auction on Saturday has 289 Stamp, Postcards and Coin lots. Estimates for the stamps vary from £20-£40 up to a couple of lots at £1000-£1500.
There appears to be one stockbook of Cape Triangles, all 3 Margins estimate £600-£800.
I'll believe it when I see it. This auction house can't tell the difference between First Day Covers and Presentation Packs so bargains can be found. (Hopefully)
There are also several Lots of Portugal & Colonies, from earlies to 2000, including some of the early Minisheets and early MNH Sets.

re: SOR 2019 Diner now open for business

In the last 3 weeks there has been two separate violent incidents at the dialysis center where I get treated; both involved patients becoming out of control and attacking others. I was mystified by the reaction of the nurses and techs, they refused to intercede and do anything other than try to ‘talk down’ the perpetrators. The perpetrators simply escalated the violence to the point of assaulting several of the staff and other patients. Making matters worse, one of the perpetrators has Hepatitis and because they had pulled the two needles from their arm, they were spraying infectious blood across the room and all over a number of people. The local police eventually arrived and arrested the offenders for assault.

I am not as shocked by the bad behavior as I was by the lack of attempts at restraining the out of control patients by the staff. After the second attack, I interfaced with the facility management and inquired about the policy for these kinds of situations. It turns the policy is ‘staff is immediately terminated if they try to physically restrain any patient’.

When you are shackled to a machine with a large amount of your blood sitting in the lines and the machine, you are in no position to jump up and get out of the chair. Just trying to stand up can often cause you to pass out and hit the floor. In other words, you are totally vulnerable. But it turns out that ‘we are on our own’ when it comes to any kind of security issues. Since the facility disallows anyone to carry any weapons and also disallows family members to sit with the patients; we are like fish in a barrel. As if going through dialysis every other day isn’t bad enough…

Hi Vic,

Its Taylors, Montrose on Saturday.

Funnily enough Robert Murray is having his on Monday. I won't be going as hopefully I won't have any money left!! ( That's short for "She who must be obeyed" would not be chuffed at me for going to two auctions in 3 days!! )

Don,
Its a sad state of affairs that patients become violent and assault staff and other patients. The hospital would probably be sued by the violent patient if the staff interfered and the violent patient got slightly injured while being restrained. Plus the staff could be injured while restraining the bampot and sue the hospital. A sad reflection on today's society!!!

Ian.

re: SOR 2019 Diner now open for business

In this case, I fault the USA implementation of socialized medicine. Many folks do not think that the USA does not have socialize medicine but it actually does. Since 1968, the US puts anyone with End Stage Renal Disease automatically on Medicare regardless of age (‘Medicare for all’). So the Federal Government covers the cost of dialysis for most of the 450,000 American dialysis patients. There are two primary dialysis companies and they do not compete with each other in 90% of the locations in the US.

So the situation is no competition and a ‘cap’ on what a company can charge for the dialysis services. With an upper limit on what the companies can charge, there is only one way for a company to be profitable…cut costs on the quality of care. Adding security guards or a response team is costly so it is not done. This is also why they use off-the-street, no medical training, ‘dialysis techs’ instead of trained nurses. This is also why the patient to nurse ratio is 15:1. This is also why rather than buy things like 20 cent Tegaderm bandage they slap a 3 cent piece of gauze and tape. This is also why they aggressively push patients to having fistula surgery instead of a catheter.

When you are a ‘professional patient’ (I have averaged over 200 medical procedures per year over the last 5 years) the difference between ‘for profit’ and ‘socialized’ healthcare is apparent and at times scary.

I don't want to turn this into a policy debate, but the parts of the US health care system that are not socialized are also dysfunctional, primarily because of third-party pay. I can say this from the perspective of a (animal) health care provider who does not benefit from third-party pay.

I have been saying that the solution to the "health care crisis" in America, while complicated, hinges on two prerequisites that are completely missing from the current system:

1. Make cost-shifting* illegal.
2. Require all providers to publicly post the charges for the services they render.

*Cost-shifting is the practice of using the payments from one patient to cover the costs incurred by another patient, and has been responsible for at least 35% of the increases in health insurance policy premiums going back decades.

How 'bout some nice stuff? I've been busy!

I started a new job about 8 weeks ago. I took over a program that has been a year in the making, where the guy up and quit a month before the training program was to go before audiences. So it was cram time!

And of course this was right when I was in the final planning for my big model car show that we run every year! So I was pushing to get much of it done ahead of time. Happy to report it went off as well as ever! This was annual show 33. http://www.nnleast.com

Then we had a few cool things happen...

Image Not Found

Image Not Found

I won the "Best Theme" award at a regional model car show in Maryland in May! The theme was TROG, which stands for "The Race of Gentlemen" which is a recent series of racing old time 1920s and 30s cars the way it was done back then. And on the beach at Wildwood, NJ. My buddy and I will go witness the actual races this fall!

Image Not Found

I got to talk about Ben Franklins at the Philatelic Gathering at the Chester County Historic Society on May 25th. Vince was there. Nobody threw rocks. I was invited back to talk about private perforations in the fall.

Image Not Found

I had an article published in the PMCC Bulletin this past month! This is the Postmark Collectors Club, http://www.postmarks.org

This was the article previously published on this board about my adventures seeking NJ postmarks on my vacation last summer. It was edited down to just the first day, and edited to fit on three printed pages. I was surprised to see it in the center fold and in color!

The PMCC is an interesting organization that mails out a 20 page printed magazine every month. I was surprised that they had no message board etc and that their website was purely informational. It was also interesting that response to the article, came to me via USPS instead of emails!

Image Not Found

So now everyone knows what I've been up to! Happy

Now I'm just doing the summer yard cleanup etc and awaiting the birth of our new twin grand daughters! The c-section is scheduled for July 19th, unless the babies have other ideas before this!

Thanks, Vic, I got plenty of weeds, with more coming. I till between the rows with my rear-tine tiller until the rows grow together. My daughter was home for the weekend and helped weed in the rows. It always seems to be looking good and then the thunderstorms come and thrash it. I have 24 tomato plants and 80 green pepper plants. My carrots are in the raised bed and beets are in the row in front of the raised bed in the picture above.

From a very recent experience, it's demoralizing/disturbing/tragic/(running out of adjectives) when dime-sized hail hits your pepper and tomato plants. The horrors of it - small green tomatoes and peppers on the ground, leaves shredded, branches broken off.

Strawberries doing well as are the beans, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and rhubarb. Blackcurrants will be ready in a couple of weeks, Gooseberries about the same time.

Nice pictures, Vic, thanks for posting them. Your garden looks very good. Some years you plant your seeds and get nothing, I know the feeling. One year I planted 40 pepper plants and harvested 3 peppers for the whole year. That is gardening, your never know what you are going to get.

re: SOR 2019 Diner now open for business

Although we had a mild winter, only a foot or two of snow, and was able to get the garden tilled earlier than usual, seems too little moisture at the sowing stage. We had our first heavy rains yesterday and more showers forecast for this week. I have had to water the rows and especially the Tomatoes and Potatoes.
Had to resow some of the peas as they failed to germinate, but they are now podding well, climbing and snap beans are flowering as are the Aubergines. I have about a dozen pepper plants that hopefully will give us a few fruits before the killing frost comes at the beginning of September.
Soil is a heavy clay loam so have to stay off when wet, but it does hold nutrients that the veg need.

Edited to add the tomato picture from our 2011 crop.

For a different subject, I have been using Windows 7 at home and work for many years but now I have a new nice company provided work laptop running Windows 10.

I have some experience with Win 10 but reminds me of the old Helen Keller joke. You spend a lot of time trying to find the settings to get to your preferences. The problem is when Win 7 runs out of support soon, if you are on Windows you have to move to keep getting security fixes.

We have twin Granddaughters! Yes it was a few weeks ago, but my daughter was being particular as to what went on the cards! So I was able to print them this morning. A limited edition of 10 cards.

Congratulations Tom. Twins! That's exciting. No twins in my family that I can recall. Love the names too. All the best to the little ones, the parents and the rest of the family.

Thank you everyone! It is very exciting!

You may recall I did cards for my eldest granddaughter only 20 months ago! Yes, my daughter now as three children under two! We were with them yesterday.

Has she not yet found out what is causing this to happen? Mind you, the more people, the more taxes are paid and the better for our pensions, could she have another dozen or so? At least then she could have her own netball team.
Congratulations to all the family.
