Following up my own message, I have found some information in Norphil's well known blog. Apparently, the types refer to details of the Queen's profile. There are also different printers and printings, lithographed vs. photogravure stamps, and a few other things that a standard catalog does not mention. Let's see what I can make of it. It looks like a challenge ...
When you say pictorial are you thinking of the types issued from 2000? If so the SG concise lists the various printings, perfs, tags for each of the regions.
The same detail is there for pre 2000 issues as well.
Yes, I mean the post-1999 issues. Is there a current volume of the Stanley Gibbons catalogue that specialises in the (decimal) EIIR definitives? What I can find on booksellers' websites is at least 10 years old.
This what you mean ?
Yep, that's part of the gallery. Thanks for the images!
Here are a few scans showing the De La Rue
and the Cartor that I saved for the day when
I try to sort this series.
Here are a few more.
After having sorted several hundred Machin stamps of the general type, I intend to tackle the regional ones, and with these come the pictorial country definitives which started to be issued in 1999. For the Machins I can use Rob Harris' excellent web pages, but there does not seem anything remotely comparable for the pictorial stamps.
Hence my question: Are there any recognised varieties of the latter, not counting the obvious ones like full bleed printing vs. white borders? According to a stamp dealer's price list there seem to be at least two types of the 2nd class Lions, 1st class Lion, 44 p oak tree, and 72 p Tudor rose, but I have not found yet an explanation of these. Can anybody elaborate on these varieties, and on any other that might exist (also on other values/designs)?
Thanks in advance!
