I bought a new, still wrapped 1971 Scott Catalogue in perfect condition. It is like going back in time to read through the hardbound pages.

I, also, have a similar 1975 paper bound set but the 1971 set is much nicer as the pages are a larger format and hardbound.

In addition, I just bought an 1892 edition Scott International album with no stamps in very nice condition. It was fascinating reading through the album's country descriptions with the land area, population, capital, and current ruler. I never realized how much bigger Russia was in 1892 than the United States in both land area and population.

Last, I found a very nice 1935 edition of Scott's Modern Postage Stamp album. It is just under 1" (24mm) thick.

I will work on doing some scans and post pictures. Has anyone else come across any unusually nice vintage catalogs, albums, or stamp collecting accessories?

re: New Purchase - 1971 Scott Catalogue Set

Just finished going through the 1935 edition of the Scott Modern Postage Stamp album cleaning it out of some used and mint stamps that were present in the album. Found 69 mint stamps (many Germany from the 1920's and 1930's) and 25 small groups of used stamps from 25 different countries. Most of the stamps were loose between the pages. Fortunately the stamps that were hinged to the pages were all done with very good quality, peelable hinges which came off very easily. All pages are now clean with no hinge remnants or residue so the album looks virtually brand new. I am quite pleased with it.

Interestingly, I prepared an Excel list of all of the stamp issuing entities represented in the album and found that there are 395 different for this 1935 edition album which is less than 1 inch (24mm) thick. The album was quite interesting in that there were almost no included stamps that were significantly outside of the era covered by the album.

Next I want to see if I can identify from the Scott Catalogue each of the pictured stamps identified in the album and make a list required to complete the album.

Also, I received a virtually unused two volume 1944 set of the Scott Catalogue to go with the 1971 set I had recently purchased. Also, today I purchased an unused Scott Japan Specialized album which covers stamps issued to 1963 complete with the dust cover while visiting a local stamp store. It includes pages as well as its binder and dust cover.

That is a very neat find. I myself use a specialized 1970 US Scott catalog as my (believe it or not) primary reference guide. This was the catalog I picked up at a library sale for 50 cents and what made me start collecting seriously.

Please do scan some pages from your older editions. Would be fun to see what they look like.

Cheers,
Christian

re: New Purchase - 1971 Scott Catalogue Set

Old catalogs are interesting!

I only a few rather old Scott World catalogs (1905, 1928, 1945), but I have more Scott Specialized US:

1928 Specialized (only the 5th Edition, the size of an iPhone)!
1945 Specialized
1959 Specialized
1972 Specialized
1990 Specialized
2008 Specialized

Then, of course, my "current" catalogs 2016 Specialized and 2015 World.

It was interesting to see how the Type definitions changed for Early US stamps over the years. It really was a fairly obvious early 20th Century ploy to create arbitrary rarities.

You would be surprised how cheap old catalogs are. Goodwill sells books on Amazon and they often have no idea what they have. I definitely recommend doing a little sniffing on Amazon from time to time to see if there are any bargains to be had! (Of course local flea markets are a good place if you have the time, but if I had that kind of free time I would be on the golf course)!

Of course there are reference books like Brookman (19th Century US) and Johl (early 20th US), Wawrukiewicz/Beecher (US Domestic and International Rates), Dietz (CSA), Springer (Revenue/Cinderella), Durland (US plate numbers), Hebert (US PNC), and one of my favorites: James H. Baxter "Printing Postage Stamps by Line Engraving". I ended up with a numbered First Edition for a fraction of what it's worth just by sniffing Amazon and eBay several years ago. There's gold in them thar hills!

re: New Purchase - 1971 Scott Catalogue Set

I always really liked the old Scott Brown albums that originally covered the world up to 1940. That is, until I realized that they could not practically display too many stamps at once because they just bulged too much.

I do have a set of 1972 Scott Catalogs. I found them on ebay a number of years ago for less then $10. I got them just as a curiosity and to check to see how pricing has changed over the years. I just checked an Albanian souvenir sheet from 1962 that I listed on HipStamp; its 1972 Scott price was $1.50 while the 2020 Scott price was $125.00. Minimum prices at that time were 3 Cents, now they are 25 Cents. Also, in looking through the very brief section at the front of each catalog, there was absolutely no mention of gum condition; my how things have changed in that area.

Since I no longer collect, I would like to give these catalogs to someone who would appreciate them and not turn around and immediately try to sell them. I will mail them to anyone with a United States mailing address free of charge (I will not mail them to anyone outside of the United States). Just let me know with a private message that you would like to receive them. There are three volumes, vinyl soft cover and in very good shape for their age.
