As a side note but related, there is no numeral "5". How noteworthy or exceptional is this?
I had read it as spending $25 for $20 worth of value.
These plate blocks with extra edges resulted from postmasters cutting out plate blocks from sheets scheduled for destruction. It was faster and easier to cut them in groups rather than tearing each by hand which took care to get good perf tears.
I got many when Postage Dues were discontinued and stocks destroyed. Friendly P O people were glad to accomodate collectors by cutting these plate blocks.
I keep seeing these plate blocks for sale with a portion of the 5 adjoining stamps attached... That would be $25 value to produce a $20 plate block. What is the story behind these?
