General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : Postmark Pursuit for the world?

Over the last few weeks, I've gone on a mild craze over the commemorative postmarks offered in Linn's Postmark Pursuit column: I've sent off for everything from the launch of Mars InSight to the Chittenden Fishing Derby. Americana in all its glory!

Are there sources where I can find out about the equivalents for other countries? Judging from the mixtures I sometimes get, it looks like Germany has a ton of these things. Does Canada? Or France (which has the good fortune to use the only other language I can write competently)? any other places I should know about? Also, is it worth my while, or would requests from the U.S. tend to get ignored or met with confusion?

A distantly related query: If anyone reading this has been involved in setting up or helping to fulfill a commemorative cancellation in the States, I'd love to hear about it. What kind of work was involved? How many requests did you get?

Thanks.

re: Postmark Pursuit for the world?

It would be more challenging to create a list of postal authorities that have never applied a slogan or event cancel to their mail.

My own guess is that, adjusted for population, the most slogan-event-cancel-prolific postal authority would be Belgium, but what do I know?

An online versions of Moe Luff's United States Postal Slogan Cancels, which will get you thru 1950, can be found here.

An online version of the out-of-print Coutts Slogan Cancel Database for Canada can be found here.

An online database of Cuba's Machine Slogan Cancellations can be found here.

Like the King said: etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

But those are slogan cancels, not necessarily event cancels, which are not the same thing, even if they can be intersecting.

Going forward, one possibility for announcements of coming slogan/event cancellations is to check the individual websites of postal authorities around the world, a fairly complete list of which can be found here. (If you do find such announcements, let us know, eh?)

Some other countries have a robust philatelic press, and you might find advance notices of slogan/event cancels in their monthly rags.

Or, you might post this same question in one of their online forums, eg, here, and see what those collectors know.

Good hunting, and don't be afraid to start a small website on the subject.

Speaking of hunting, I am certain that I once saw the USPS rules for applying for a special event cancel, but cannot find them right now.

Hint #1 ask a club that issued a special event cover with a special event slogan cancel how they did it.

Hint #2 http://www.uspostalbulletins.com ... GO FISH!

Cheers,

Here is a link on how to obtain pictorial postmarks from Norway.

https://www.posten.no/en/stamps-collecting/special-cancellations
I've not tried this service yet since not much notice is given to submit covers. However I intend to order some Norwegian stamps to have on hand to prepare covers when I do find out about a new postmark.

And since it's not mentioned yet, may I suggest taking a look at our benefactor's site? Roy Lingen provides this board to us free of charge. I like to say thanks by placing an occasional order with him: https://www.buckacover.com/

You will find TONS of neat pictorial postmarks from all countries here at cheap prices!

re: Postmark Pursuit for the world?

I haven't been able to get back here for a while, so belated thanks to all who have replied. The bookmarks are piling up....

I did manage to get to a German site called http://www.sonderstempel.info/ that seems to have a lot of information about German special cancellations; I'll need some help navigating it, but I'm seriously considering taking an online German course anyway, so now I have a bit of extra incentive. Pretty much the same story with the posten.no site that erthur brought up.

Just to acknowledge BenFranklin1902's promo for the sponsor here, one of my other micro-obsessions is getting non-philatelic postmarks from towns in Africa that I've never heard of; therefore I'm a big fan of Buck-a-Cover and have been very satisfied with every order I've placed with them and various outposts in the Roy Lingen philatelic federation.

Thanks again. Now off to churn out a few form letters and learn some useful phrases in German. If I can master "Do you have wild ferrets in your town?" it'll be a good day.
