Hi all,

If I was mainly (at the moment) interested in FDC's, Postal Cards, Stamped Envelopes etc, what Scott catalog would be most helpful to own?

I have no experience with these catalogs, but they seem helpful to look things up.

Can you point me in a direction?

Thanks! Big Grin

Hi Benque,

Well there's a rather obvious bit of information that I forgot to mention.

I'd like to start with the US and branch out. But I also have an interest in Israel.

Thanks!

Hi Johnny,
I like worldwide covers, so I am also interested in seeing the responses to your request from those more knowleggeable than I.
I have to admit though, stamps are of more interest to me than covers, but I'll gladly collect anything even remotely associated with philately.
I'll also have to admit that WWI, WWII, and empire expansions are what I find most interesting in regard to covers.

For the US, the Scott US Specialized Catalog of Stamps and Covers is a good place to start.

It gives general prices for stamps on cover and first day covers.

There is also the Planty's Photo Encyclopedia of First Day Covers which goes into more detail of all the different cachets for each stamp's first day of issue.

They can be acquired through the American First Day Cover Society's webpage.

Hi Smauggie,

Thanks for the info.

I think this is exactly what I'm looking for.

Amazon has the Scott's for about $25 used.

Thanks!

Check ebay with a search for "scott us specialized catalog". I see 2010-2012 editions on a Buy it Now for $10-$15. Make sure you check the postage.

Use the FDC prices with a large grain of salt. FDCs are all about the cachets, and Scott only prices a general "cacheted" price, but even it is way over the price you can buy them for. Planty/Mellone is even worse for pricing. Some "premium" cachets they list for $25, I routinely sell for $1.50-$3.00 to an active market.

Scott prices for "single on cover" (available in the Classic 1840-1940 and the US specialized) are also suspect. Very few collectors are motivated to buy a cover simply because of the use of the single stamp. Postal history is all about the "story" -- the rate, the route, the destination, the markings etc. With those, the catalogue price is pretty much immaterial, without those, the catalogue price is pretty much immaterial!
