re: South Africa #409 and #431

Bob,

According to my Scott Catalog, it looks to be #409 - sheet stamp.

#'s 408 thru 423 are sheet stamps and #'s 430 to 433 are the coils.

The coil stamps are two colors. the sheet stamps are multicolored.

The stamp on the right is a coil stamp Scott # 431.

They may use sheets of stamps that are perforated on all sides and made then into rolls (coils) of stamps.

Doug makes a good point that may not be widely known.
Not all "Coil Stamps" have straight sides
as the coils are assembled by trimming strips from sheets.
However, quite often a close examination of the perforation's tips
will show that the stamps of the sheet were professionally cut
and not torn.

Close examination of the perforations is the principle method
that Machin's sources can be sorted into sheet stamps, coil stamps
or booklet stamps, and in fact, where in a booklet sheet the stamp was printed, or whether a coil stamp was from a side by side coil or a head to toe coil strip.
