I bought one back in the 80's. It all depends on the stamp. Probably experimenting with color filters (acetate or cellophane) would help on yellows and reds and there is no evaporation problem to worry about (you can take your time) but it is not 100 per cent. I've had better luck with the tough ones scanning the back and playing with the image - give it a try.
While typing I just had an idea - I have a scanner for copying slides that is backlit - I will drag it out and give it a try the next time I go through a batch of W-F's. It may be awhile - lousy summer project.
I've thought about using the slide-scanning feature on my scanner for that same purpose, but haven't had enough of a burning need yet to actually figure out how to do it.
If you get to it before I do, please do share your experiences.
I have tried the color filter idea using Adobe Lightroom but not having that much success. I had thought about the scanner in transparent mode. I have a tough GB commonwealth stamp on yellow/orange paper that I cannot see anything using Clarity.
If the Signoscope has a high success rate (greater than 50%) I would consider getting it.
What about the Sherlock Watermark detector from Leuchtturm? It has built in different light (led)

Just acquired a T-1 model for decent price on eBay. I paid $125 with S&H - down from $139 asking price. If back of stamp is clear of hinge remnants - it works pretty good, but really haven't used it a lot yet. Had one of those dark red stamps today - 2 actually - in lighter fluid, no watermark can be seen. Using the Signoscope T-1, One clearly showed the watermark, the other - not clear - but it had a hinge remnant. For the stamps I was using, it only comes in one watermark, so what's on it didn't really matter. I just wanted to test my new "toy" with such a stamp.
As another test, I just looked at a MNH Bermuda #421 with Wmk 372, which Scott notes as usually only faintly visible. Tried that one - Watermark very very clearly seen in the Signoscope T-1. Tried in fluid - could be seen - but very faint. If looking for the sideways varieties of that watermark, I'd say the Signoscope would be much better for the task.
At the price I paid, I'm satisfied with it, but if the device dies - I wouldn't pay full retail for it. My 2¢
Has anyone tried one, used one? What did you think? It's kind of a big purchase but it would be so nice not to have to use watermark fluid or ronsonol. Any help would be appreciated.
