I agree with Don. There are 17. While the top row is rather week it's there but the Blue cancel only touched a few of the grill tips. It's a great example of a grill fulfilling it purpose. The grilles were pressed into the paper to break up the paper fibers to allow the ink to be soaked up by them and make the cancel hard to erase. From the back of the stamp it is clear that the grill did just that, showing the grill tips as the color of the cancel.

I´ve received a few US stamps. Having problems with the grills.

As you can read in my notes, I´m not sure if there are 16 o 17 dots.
