I have looked in the Stanley Gibbons Elizabethan Stamp Catalogue. The bicolour stamp was part of the original issue of 1953 while the monocolour was not issued until 1956. The bicolour comes in 2 different shades and the monololour in several different shades of grey. The latter also come with 2 different plate printings and several reentries and is worthy of study. Two of the printings of the grey stamp were only available in Nigeria, while the remainder were also available from the Crown Agents in London.
With all the minute detail in the catalogue the one thing it doesn't mention is why the change was made ! However it is possible that the original colour didn't react well to the tropics.

Hi all,
I have been researching a Nigerian stamp that appears to be from around 1953. Its subject matter is the mining of tin. The stamp was created during the time when Nigeria was still ruled by the United Kingdom, thus we see a small picture of Queen Elizabeth II in the upper right corner of the stamp.
There appears to have been two different stamps printed on this subject matter. Both identical in many ways, but not color.
I had read that of the two stamps printed on the subject, the "slate gray" stamp was more rare because of something to do with the ink that it was printed with.
Does anyone know why there were two versions of this stamp?
Thank you,
JR
