Hi All,

I dont even know if this is British or even a stamp. The early GB stamps I see in catalogs have "Postage" somewhere on them and this one obviously does not.
Any help on what this is and from where is appreciated.....

Dave N.

It is a cutout from postal stationery, likely a wrapper, given the denomination.

It doesn't look like a GB cut-out to me.

The design is a similar to the stamp on the first GB postcard except that that had "HALF PENNY" printed in two words in colour on a white background rather than reversed out like this one.

The corner ornaments as different as well.

Maybe it's a colonial cut-out or from a non-postal item?

Hi Dave,

Here's a Cape of Good Hope wrapper:

It's just a stamped single piece of paper that would be wrapped around a folded newspaper or magazine.

This one has the top edge gummed.

Nigel, you are quite correct.

Normally, on the colonial issues the colony name is included in the indicia (the "stamp" part), like your CGH example.

However, here is an example of a complete wrapper this came from (from my "sold" database)

Could be 1882 or 1884. Check below under Panel B: Indicium differences
