Interesting! Thanks for sharing.
I have, through persistent searching for hard-to-find material, definitely noticed a discrepancy between Scott pricing and the apparent prevalence of individual issues in the marketplace.
That is, the hardest-to-find material is not typically the highest priced, if you follow a market closely. This seems to be particularly noticeable when I close in on the last few holes in completing a collection.
And, conversely, often, the stuff that has the highest catalog value is relatively easy to find. Of course, the stuff with the highest purported value is perhaps the most preferred for speculative purposes, and so might be traded (and fraudulently represented) more frequently.
Often, when I wonder how much I should bid, I look at Completed Listings that sold. I trust that data more than anything published in Scott.
There is nothing better than an actively traded marketplace for representing true value. And, the more active the trading, the more representative it is. This is what is known as "price discovery". I say, "Hail eBay!"
Just My Humble Opinion.

For those of you who don't subscribe to the American Stamp Dealer & Collector magazine,
the following article from the January 2018 issue
is an interesting opinion by Wayne Youngblood regarding Ebay;
certainly worth reading!
