I will definitely add a visit to my itinerary goals if I get the chance to visit Boston. Thanks for sharing the information. Are their books available on open shelves so that you can walk down them looking for books or are they only available through catalog check-out? Open shelves are wonderful for browsing when you don't have check-out privileges due to being from out of state.

Unfortunately jb most all of the books on the list are only available through a request at the service desk. They can be accessed in the library but can't be checked out.
That's too bad because I agree with you it would be great to browse through many of these on the shelves. You have to request the book and then it takes 15-20 minutes to get it, so browsing is a slow process!

If you're looking to expand your philatelic library, an article in the 1st Quarter 2018 Philatelic Literature Review announced that the American Philatelic Research Library had more than 1,000 duplicate literature items available for sale, including books and auction catalogs.
You can search the APRL catalog for a listing of the available material.

Google can be your friend. Type in "Philatelic Literature" and you will come up with several dealers specializing in philatelic books. Search Ebay and Hipstamps - I often stumble across them on Abebooks being sold by book dealers - some do research on value, some don't.
Once in awhile even your local Craigslist offers opportunities.......and don't pass up regular antique shops - some are a goldmine for postal history (think bulk). Often that "Choice $5.00" box is available for bulk purchase - just check over condition.

Here is a dealer that has an excellent collection of philatelic literature.He has over 3,000 books for sale. Common volumes are often cheaper as used books on Amazon but he has many you will never find there. I have purchased both books and stamps from him.

Say Ernie,
At Robert Swed's presentation on Delaware Postal History, back in February, I happened to get in the middle of a conversation between him and Ron Majors. Both have large collections of Civil War Patriotic covers. The conversation was about the Nutmeg auction of Jon Bischel's collection. The catalog for that auction has become an important reference. It was a comprehensive collection, and every item sold in that auction was color illustrated in the catalog. Here's a link describing that catalog:

We moved to Boston some months ago and today I finally got around to visiting the main branch of The Boston Public Library. Wow! See attached list of their philately collection; some seriously esoteric titles.
