The USPS has released images of the 2018 stamp program. I know many more will recognize Sally Ride, Mr. Rogers, John Lennon, and Lena Horne than some recent people.

This year's Flag seems like they have run out of ideas.

Commemoratives for popsicles? Is that a new low for the USPS?

re: 2018 US Stamp Program

Personally, I kind of like the flag design - seems somewhat different from what I've seen in the past. If any of these designs shows lack of originality, I'd say it's the winter birds. Looks like a simplified design of earlier issues. And what's with the Lennon issue? I'ts not really connected to any appreciable anniversary. Some nice designs amongst the rest.

From my collection side of things, the doughboy will be high on my list, as will the lovely Ms. Horne who I have always admired artistically and personally.

re: 2018 US Stamp Program

The flag design is too stiff, too stylized. The Illinois stamp is awful. There is really nothing to shout about it. John Lennon? "Really, really?", as Cartman would say. I agree those birds are for the birds. As a collector of Art on Stamps I am disappointed there are no great Art postage stamps in that group: no fine art, no sculpture, no architecture. Of course, I may be parsing and I am not seeing right...

Help, please...

At least for the Illinois, you know it is about Illinois instead of some image (country side) that could be from almost any state.

My idea for statehood states is a 10 stamp pane with different images so more aspects of the state can be shown. For example, for Illinois it could be Chicago, something to do with Lincoln, O'Hare, etc.

If they are only issuing one stamp for World War 1 why would you think they would do ten stamps for Illinois. Ten stamp subjects are reserved for important things like ice pops, cartoons and Star Wars.
Sorry I am just angry that WWI is not being remembered as the important part our history.

"Commemoratives for popsicles?"

I guess the 2016 Ice Cream "Fountain Favorites" was a success?

When I got back to stamp collecting a few years ago and reviewed the stamp subjects of the past 30 years, I was a bit dismayed.

When did the post office go crazy?

1893. The first US commemorative set -- the Columbian Exposition stamps were way out of the budget of the average person. A full set was more than a weeks wage!

I'm as big a Beatles fan as anyone (see my earwavesagain.com/fab100.html page), but the Lennon issue just seems to be a Boomer lure with, as someone has pointed out, no anniversary justification. He moved to and died in New York, but he'll always be Liverpudlian to the world.

At least the popsicle stamps are more colorful than the infamous 1948 chicken stamp! Surprise

To me, the O Beautiful issue, that pane of 20 (all different) scenes from America right next to Lena is absolutely GORGEOUS!

I examined it more closely, and the images look like actual photographs. The colors are unreal!

As for the rest...eh.

This reminds me that Danish Post used to have a contest every year to pick the best stamp. Those who picked the winner were entered in a drawing for a trip. I usually picked the winner, but never won the trip!

On a warm summer night, I thought all kids would catch 'lightning bugs' in Mason jars...but perhaps I was just a weird kid?
