I think what you are seeing is not actually a watermark, but varnish lozenges. That would make the stamp Russia Scott #109, Michel #130A. There are color shades (carmine lake; carmine; rose red) along with the yellow and gray. It's hard to tell from the image.
Thanks Michael,
I had narrowed it down to the Scott #109, but since I do not collect Russian stamps, I was a little confused about the Lozenges of varnish. I could see nothing on the face until I did a watermark on the face and then the diamond pattern showed up. From the back the diamond pattern is very plane when watermarked, but I should have known that watermarks show up as dark images and not white images that I was seeing.
Again thanks for your help.
Other countries, like Austria, also used varnish on the face of stamps. It was designed to keep people from cleaning the cancellation off a stamp.
Have the below image of a mutilated block which I believe is a Russian stamp. However have a problem with correct ID. The stamp looks exactly like the image in Linn's Stamp Identifier of a Ukraine Scott #26, but without the trident. In my scott specialized catalog, it indicates that Russian image A13, Scott #72 differs in many details from the illustration. The stamp perfs at 13 1/2, but the kicker is that there is a diamond watermark #171. No where can I find the stamp with the perfs and watermark. I have also looked at Far Eastern Republic, Finland, Serbia and South Russia. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.
