I have a 2012 pocket catalogue and I will state that was not very useful for what I needed. My primary complaint was they did not list many minor catalogue varieties and that they did list was mostly errors, etc.
I had sent my comments to Scott a couple years back on why list unaffordable errors in a checklist and ignore so many common minor varieties.
The content was about the same as a Mystic catalogue. I wondered who was their target use. A beginner interested in expensive errors? It is not really pocket sized (little large to fit in any pocket) either. It was spiral bound with a stiff cover so it would be durable.
I do believe there is market for something like this but this was not it.
That's really interesting. Why would they list errors and such? If we want a pocket catalogue, then at least make it worth our efforts and list current stamps.
Anybody else have and thoughts about this?
This is sample of a 2012 version page. The definitive do get a little more attention than the others.
I have this version from 1999. It is paperback.
I use it regularly because it has nice color photos of each stamp with the catalog number under each, and it's easy to thumb through.
Note that it's supposed to be a checklist that you can use to catalog your collection. It would be good to be able to take that to shows so you know what to buy.
Al, does the book show a picture of the stamps?
Tom, that looks like the FDC book I have. I'm getting a better idea in my head now.
If the pocket catalogue does have pictures of the stamps I could use it for ID'ing recent stamps. Right now I'm having to go through my Linn's for the Scott number and pricing.
Just a thought - I use a Mystic catalog for ID of US when I sit down to list them - I find it very easy to find the stamp I am looking for and I price match so don't care about catalog value.
Best part is it is free. If this link breaks the board I apologize - will remove it and just google Mystic stamp catalog. You can even look at it online to see if it is something that will work for you.... I believe they keep it quite current.....

Thanks for the link, Carol. The only thing that I don't like about Mystic is they try to rope you into purchasing stamps from them. I just don't want that kind of pressure at this point. I fell into it before and don't want to do it again. Is there a way around that? Might have to ponder that avenue.
The images in my 2012 are on the facing page as the pics.
The next best equivalent to Scott Specialized is a spiral bound Brookman. You can pick up a year old one off ebay. It lists most any stamp a typical intermediate collector (color, date code, perforation, etc) would want to collect plus images for most.
The problem with the pocket catalog today is that it doesn't fit in your pocket unless you're Captain Kangaroo.
Fortunately I have decided to get a messenger bag. My Kindle fits really well so I imagine that will too.
Did the Captain collect stamps?
I don't know if he collected stamps, but he was a model railroader.
I saw in Linn's that they are going to be publishing this catalogue next month.
I'm seriously considering purchasing it. My big volumes are 2013's and this might be a little easier on the pocketbook.
Looking for opinions about this catalogue. Is it even worth it as compared to getting only the newest big one? I don't even know how much the pocket size will be.
Just playing around with the idea and need someone to either talk me out of it or tell me it's a really good deal.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Luree
